Well at the moment we live rent free so I doubt we'd save more by renting.

I did not know that you were lving rent free, sorry.

So ok, renting is not the option but you certainly would be better off staying where you are and saving more.

It certainly won't do any harm.

Agree... if you're rent free at the moment, I'd hang on as long as you can bear it! I was out the door at 21, but did go out with someone once who was 29 and still happily living at home! Whatever you can both bear, I suppose! Know it's tough when you want to live together.

    Aye I know.

I quite like the place we live now but gf doesn't get on that well with her brother who also livs there when he isn't touring. He do wnat the dog which we can't have there and place for our stuff (I oved form Leeds so a fair bit of my stuff is still there). She really wants to move..

I am 26 and she is this year so we should be gone by now.

The dog thing is fine, I work the usual day hours and my gf mostly works at night so between us we have it covered!

Any suggestions for anywhere would be greatly welcome!
  • So you live rent-free AND you have the place to yourselves for quite a lot of the time? Stop where you are, save like mad and only move when you can't stand it any longer!

Truly, this is the best advice!
I reckon buying a flat at the moment in this shaky market is a bit unwise as in 3-5 years it may not be worth much more (or less!). Even in London, even in and 'up-and-coming' area. A bigger place that could accomodate potential children would stand you in much better stead.Unfortunately a house is out of the question in this case.
Sounds like you currently have a pretty ideal set up. Trust me, if you were renting in London with those salaries you would be lucky to save anything - and the flat you'd be able to afford would be crappy (been there and sick to the skin of it after 6+ years!)

haha well we don't have it free most the time. It's her parents place. Her Dad is retired so he is always around (she doesn't like him too much either). Her mum works but is also around. Her bother lives here (though he is touring but that finishes soon) and his girlfriend to.

It's a sizable enough place and I can get to work ok as the train takes me straight to Victoria (though I hate the train fare!). But istting in my room, not being able to put stuff on the walls coz the room was originally gonna be used for her mums business venture ( and may still be) and not have all my stuff here and watch buying new stuff for room and no dog does get me down.

I alos bought a car this year and she drives to so that's another thing.

How much should we save? Is £20K not enough?

lol i have a budget of 250k and still cant find a decent 2 bedroom flat, though i am looking in North london and new builds. I think maybe East london is cheaper and maybe SE as mentioned, but you get some dodgy areas around there. As for houses you have no chance, unless you look at areas like chelthnam you might get a 2 bed terrace for 100-130k. If you want to be in london just keep saving until you get 60/70K and then you might be in for a shot.

    250k???

    60/70K deposit?

    damn :(

I looked out of london last night, seemed to be a few in Kent area.

    Possible?
  • You're going to have to go out of London if you want to buy a house on your current salaries; maybe even out of the home counties. If you want to get out of her parents' house you will have to rent I reckon.
I think you need to readjust your expectations at the moment, sorry.
Presume you've done some calculations for how much a dog will cost you per month; And have you sat down to work out how much bills will be too (even before mortgage/rent)
You are both still young (i know that sounds patronising and I'm only a few years older, so sorry), but you do have time on your side and its the best time to be knuckling down, try to increase your salary (haha great advice at the moment!) as well as have some fun before getting tied in to any massive financial commitments. If you buy a house at your age, you are going to miss out on a lot of fun, with the money needed to go towards the house; simple as.

It's easy for us to say, sit tight at her parents' house, I know it can be awful, but I think if you leave you'll soon realise how great you had it and will be kicking yourself. Can you try and find some cheap things to do to get you out of the house a bit more?

given your low salaries even 60k deposit wont be enough, you are lucky your living rent free so save as much as you can for 1/2 yrs, make sure your gf knows the situation and doesnt waste money on shoes and clothes! I did look at the home counties but for a flat there wasnt much price different, areas like Kent might have cheaper properties but i looked at Ashford which was same as london. Theres a website showing areas commutable from your work, trying looking for it.
