hamburger relates to the fact burgers originated in Hamburg, not the origin of their meat. So it's not that amusing...

A day at a bakery when I was 16, I was absolutely useless and I was so tired at the end of it.

  • Around 15 minutes - it was a temp Xmas job at a ladieswear concession in a large department store in Hanley. I turned up, was shown how to use the till, then the woman told me that I would be working alone on theconcession all day as someone hadn't turned up and she had to go back to her own store - she didn't actually work in that store and had only come to open up.
She could tell me nothing regarding health and safety in the store, nothing about who to contact if there were any problems, and told me I wouldn't be able to have any breaks ... so I told her I wouldn't be able to work !!!

  • :oAfter my A levels I worked for a whole morning at a 4star hotel as a room cleaner. It turns out making the ends of toilet rolls into little points and being timed hoovering is not for me and during the free lunch in the canteen - undercooked rice and rubber chicken - I called my mum to fetch me. Didn't even tell them I was leaving.

1 day in Dixons - an all male branch where I wasn't even allowed to speak to customers just fetch things from the stockroom. I did get paid £23 for my day's work though. I pretended to be so ill I wouldn't be able to go back for a few weeks:o and never turned up again

A morning in a high street stationer's lining up back to school pencil cases - then realising there were hundreds more boxes and the sun was shining (I was a uni student:o)

I lasted 6 hours at PC World. My interview was 45 minutes late. When I finally got into the interview room the manager had some sort of nervous breakdown and sat with his face in his hands for several minutes.

He tried to interview me for a sales job but I explained I'd applied for just shelf stacking. He still kept trying to push me towards sales.

On the first day, myself and all the other staff had to spend an hour standing out in the carpark because both managers were late. I followed everyone into the store and nobody knew who I was, nobody was prepared for a new starter. I was given a red jumped two sizes too large. The stockroom manager was suppose to give me stockroom training but he turned up four hours late.

A customer came up to me with a printer, he explained he'd bought the printer but had gotten his old one to work so he'd like a refund. I looked at his receipt and he'd bought the printer 9 months ago. I explained I didn't think we'd refund something he'd bought so long ago but I said I'd check with the manager.

I went over to the manager and explained what the customer had asked for. His reply was "haha, tell him to f**k off."

I went back to the customer and politely explained we couldn't refund the printer. The guy asked to speak to the manager, who I called over.

The manager immediately agreed to the refund and makes me out to be a liar.

    I walked.
  • 15 minutes...got a job with a marriott hotel. Was a uni student at the time (first year, in halls) and told the lady interviewing me that I wasn't sure exactly when I would be away for Christmas as I still had to book flights (this was in october), but gave her a rough idea (about 3 days either side, but 18th december as aboslute latest). She said that was fine as long as I had booked flights and had set dates by the time I started work.

I duly did this, and ended up booking flight for a week before christmas, which was when the uni halls kicked me out for the holidays. Arrived at work, put the dates on the piece of paper provided and 5 mins later the manager storms up to me and tells me that it's unacceptable that I can't work over christmas. I politely pointed out to her that I had told her that I would be away, and had said that the 18th would be the absolute latest I could stay as I was in halls at uni and so couldn't stay over christmas even if I wanted to. She then got angry at me and started demanding that I "find someone to stay with" so I could continue working. I told her that wasn't possible, so she fired me...didn't even let me finish out the shift.
  • 3 months in a law firm when I was a uni student. Was studying law so thought it would be good experience. Learned nothing, just had to phone up clients and ask them why they hadn't sent documents in. They weren't too happy considering I was phoning sometimes at 9pm!

My manager did nothing but moan at us and pulled me up one day for abusing the internet usage. I denied this and she then confromted me with a screen grab showing the laptop i'd bought at work the night before! I posted my resignation letter that night.
  • One morning, working in a hotel kitchen. The kichen was filthy, so bad I was too scared to eat any of the food prepared there. The wages were terrible and the meals on shift had been a big part of the wages so I left at lunch time and never went back
