Advice on new car

Dare I suggest you also look at cars that are just a few months old. New cars depreciate by thousands as soon as you drive out of the dealership.
Last year we bought a Corsa which was 5 months old with only 18 miles on the clock and it was £3k less than a new one.
And when you go, haggle for petrol, carpets etc.
Was that £3k less than new list or 3k less than the new discounted price that are usualy 20%-30%?0 -
Look at pre-registered cars for good savings and don't forget that any car that is delivered after Jan 4th attracts VAT at 20% so that's an extra £225 on a £9000 new car. Jan 4th might seem along way off but I have waited 21 weeks for a new Mondeo to be delivered.0

Pug 207 with the 1.6 110HDi engine, goes very well as does our Citroen C2 VTS with the same engine, 50+mpg unless you really hammer it and £30 VED, can't go wrong.0

Diesel cars cost more, diesel costs more than petrol (this will become more so as the economy recovers) diesels have some expensive parts that go wrong. You really aren't doing enough miles to move away from petrol.
!
Diesel only costs a tiny bit more than petrol and has been cheaper in the past. Currently arount 2p on £1.13 so 20%-40% better economy makes break even on quite low mieage
So for the 207 the 1.4 petrol and 1.6 diesel are about the same performance (90bhp). 47/65 MPG fuel thats 10.93 ppm petrol and 8.16ppm diesel.
2.7ppm(8k) give the OP around £216 + £90 tax saving per year wich will cover a shorter service interval costs
Not a lot on the low mileage but also you fill up a lot less often.
Why do you think it will get worse if the econmy improves.
The more people use petrol the cheaper diesel gets.
they canot chose what comes out od the ground so if more of one is needed they get more of the other.
We have found our 2 , 306 1.9,clio 1.5. similar costs to maintain as petrols.
Personaly I don't think there is not a lot in so it will be down to which versions of the chosen car they like to dive and comes up at the right price when looking.0 -
For what she wants I wouldn't recommend a soot chucker.
Good shout on the MX-5, forgot about that, nice cars, very nippy, and you get some top down action during the 1 week of sunshine we get in the UK :rotfl:.0 -
Quite like the MX-5 but unfortunately it would be £850+ to insure :eek:0

Big difference in price between the two, might be prohibitive depending on the age of the car you want
They don't depreciate like other cars though so you'll lose less over time than on almost any other car
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Peugeot's and ten foot barge poles spring to mind....
The only reason Peugeot were any good at all was the 205 GTI, 106 GTI and the 306 GTI/Rallye, these cars just about made up for the poor build and unreliable electrics.
(maybe include the Talbot Lotus Sunbeam if you want to go back a long way into Peugeot's history)
Now though, the old problems are all still there and the car's are all tall, slow, heavy, boring and designed for old folk to collect their pensions in. They started going wrong with the 206 and it's just gotten worse from there on in.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
