when you say quicker how much quicker would you like?

If you like the 107 you could look up the peugeot range

We run a 306(98) and that is a nice size small hatch

the newer 308/207 might be worth a look and a notch up in size.

You could look at the panoramic roof and some luxury specs to compensate for dropping the CC

I was looking at the 308SW and there were a few around under £10k with the hatch there will be loads more.

With the budget a new low spec

or 1y old high spec 207 is in reach.

allthough I would go to around 3 years old and save some money
3y 207 SE premiums with <20k miles £6-£7k thats £2k to spend on a bit more tax and fuel insurance.
I found this one through Autotrader(no connection over 100miles from us) Dec 07( Use http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk to check details)
    13k miles
£6k probably was around £13k list new.

Problem is to get the economy you might need to go diesel allthough the petrols are OK/good for your driving needs.

I would think carefully on the 3/5 doors we also have a 3dr clio(02) which is very good nippy economical 2 year service interval but we hate it for more than just the 2 of us geting in and out of the back also with the small boot and seats do not fold well not so good for trips.
Still worth a look for your needs.

Dare I suggest you also look at cars that are just a few months old. New cars depreciate by thousands as soon as you drive out of the dealership.

Last year we bought a Corsa which was 5 months old with only 18 miles on the clock and it was £3k less than a new one.

And when you go, haggle for petrol, carpets etc.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Thanks everyone, definately a lot to think about. Have been looking at the 207 hdi as it's more economical than the petrol and your right, it is a lot better value than the 207cc. Have a week off work next week so will definately go for a good look around.

Wow you got a great deal there. Will definately haggle, they expect people to don't they?

I had a 207 up until June and I loved it! I switched it for a new Renault Clio which I hate with an absolute passion! Awful car to drive and no comparison to my 207! Really wish I'd never done it and would take my 57 plate 207 back in a heartbeat!

My experience with the 207 was it was a really reliable car, nice and sturdy, had it from new. Go out and test drive it and see what you think :)

Thanks scottishgirl, I have always driven peugeots and have always found them to be really reliable (I know someone is probably about to come along with a story about an awful experience they've had lol) can I ask which version of the 207 it was that you had?

I had the 3 door 57 plate 207 m:play. It was designed a bit like a Sport but not really, had MP3 inbuilt, sports seats etc. It was a limited edition so you don't get that type anymore.

Man I want mine back so badly! You'll always get someone who comes along and doesn't agree though. My new Clio is rated better than my 207 just about everywhere and I hate it, feel as if it's a total downgrade!

Why the change to diesel all of a sudden? You say you wanted something a bit quicker, admitiably peugeot petrol engines arent exactly pokey, but the diesels are worse for swiftness, you're only going to attain a little gain in performance over a 107, (don't even look at the 1.4 HDI, not worth it ). But also you do 8/9k miles a year? Even upto 10/11k miles a year I wouldn't be in a diesel, I'd still be in a petrol (that's another matter, my lifetime goal is to never have to fill up a privately owned car from the black pump :rotfl:)

As I say I'm a bit clueless about petrol vs diesel and the inner workings lol. I just noticed that the diesel does a lot more mpg than the petrol (from what autotrader told me anyway)

Diesel cars cost more, diesel costs more than petrol (this will become more so as the economy recovers) diesels have some expensive parts that go wrong. You really aren't doing enough miles to move away from petrol.

You really should consider a MX-5 not strictly money saving but if it was just about money saving you should stick with the 106. They do hold there value well (better than any euro box) and are totally reliable. Buy it now in your life your getting married next year then kids might arrive and you wont be able to have a sports car till you are 50 plus!
