Advice on new car

Hi, I currently drive a Peugeot 107 (1.0) as at the time bought it for low tax, low insurance, economical etc as I had just come out of university.
Now I have been working for a few years and have saved up a bit I would like to buy a new car. I will have about £9,000 to spend and want something a bit quicker that looks nice and isn't too expensive to insure (I am a 22 yr old female, 2 years NCB and no penalty points etc). I have been thinking of maybe a Peugeot 207 coupe cabriolet and would like any feedback people have on thise car and any other suggestions of what I could get?
Thanks!
Lauren

I have a similar car history to yourself but am somewhat older, and started with a 106 diesel which wasn't particularly attractive but was a v. good small car. Having bought a 206cc some years ago I would advise against: it's impractical, not a particularly nice drive, you will hardly use the roof function because its either too cold or to avoid a car-jacking, and finally it is far too expensive to maintain. Ok so anyone got any suggestions of what would be a good choice then?0

A few things to consider when looking for a car
1) how much mileage are you planning to do
2) what sort of mileage, stop/start city or motorway
3) how punitive are the insurance quotes for bigger cars
I would say that given your budget you could get a nice mini which is a pretty nice car.
Regarding getting a convertible, I would be a bit careful. There are cars that are designed to be convertibles like jag xk's and audi tt's and then there are cars that get the roof chopped off and its very much an after-though.
I doubt as much thought was put into the 207 so they woulnt be as good as the roofed versions. I would not get a convertible till you can afford a car that suits it.0 -
1) I do about 8 - 9000 miles a year
2) Mostly stop/start city driving and a bit of motorway
3) Have checked quotes for the 207cc (£700) and a few others like a mini was £590
Thanks for the advice re convertibles, this is only my 2nd car of my own so am a bit of s novice and any advice is appreciated

Cars are generaly money pits so the above is usefull advice except maby the mini AIUI they are not that good.
Buy a car on needs and practicality not rust looks.
As well as tax and insurance mpg also look at service intervals
Do you need
more space for stuff?
more doors for carrying people?
Great you have saved up this amount(no debt) but what % of your income/savings will be needed for the replacing car fund for the next purchase given you will probably have increased running costs.
Are there no other higher priorities for the money?
Depreciation is a big part of the costs so think 50% in 3-4 years
How old was the 107 when you got it and cost, whats it worth now?
Looking at the base specs for the 107.
Ins 1
0-60 14-15s
topa 100
68bhp
50u/60c/70xu MPGs
tax B (£20)
service 10k
207cc( http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/peugeot/207-cc-2007/ )
the 1.6
Ins 7
0-60 10.7
topa 124
120bhp
30u/40c/50xu MPGs
tax F (£125)
service 20k (might still be 1y)
Significant extra running costs will you use the main feature the drop top that much with a lot of city driving?
If you drop the drop top, then a small but generaly quicker but still cheap to run opens up a lot more options.0 -
THanks getmore4less, that is a really useful post
I don't have much of a need when it comes to space, it is usually just me in the car or maybe one other person, certainly not more than that for long distances. I think you may be right, if I forget the convertible then I could get a lot more for the money with probably lower insurance and running costs. I have had a good look but my mind is boggled with so many choices. Anyone got any reccomendations from cars they have had/know about? 0 -
So ideally you're looking at a small 3 door hatchback, I take it 5 doors isn't a necessity, I'd recommend going out and test driving a few cars, i.e. Ford Fiesta 1.6, Renault Clio 1.4/1.6, Vauxhall Corsa 1.4/1.6 etc. etc. and see which feels right to drive, and which looks and feels the best in teh flesh.0
