  • Hi all,

I have only just started batch cooking with slow cooker and meal planning, finding it a bit hard but persevering.

Can anyone recommend good lunches for me and Mr EL? We currently make sandwiches but I don't like bread so send up on Ryvita with whatever I can find (squeezy cheese, hummus or parma ham etc).

I like tortilla wraps but are they healthy?

I end up going to Sommerfield and spending £6-£8 a week on lunch ingreadients just for me.

Sometimes I think I'd be better off paying £2 a day for tortilla/sandwich with lovely fillings at the shop round the corner from the office...

    Can anyone help?

Both I and Mr EL have fridges and microwaves at work...

  • How about jacket potatoes - cooked before hand in oven whilst you are cooking something else to preserve energy and then wiazz at work in the microwave - have beens, tuna ,cheese, chilli, coleslaw etc with it - nice and warming through the cold months.

I usually end up taking left overs - like lest over pasta bake - yum, yum some how tastes better second time round - i am having left over shepheards pie today...making my tummy rumble already.

  • Hi all - so just bake potatoes ar normal, then when they have cooled down add butter and grated cheese, pop into aluminium foil and freeze?

If frozen, how long would he zap it for in microwave, or would we need to take potato out of freezer night before?

    hya eagerlearner,

yes tortilla wraps are healthy, they have a low gi, like pitta bread, so they release energy slowly throughout the afternoon, ao better than white bread or bagetttes etc,

Hi eagerlearner, My OH usually takes leftovers into work for his lunch. We got the small takeaway type containers from the poundshop and when I make chilli/bolognese/curry we freeze small portions in them, then he just gets one from freezer when he gets sick of sarnies. Sometimes I'll do extra pasta, when its cool add some salad and either tuna ham cheese whatever he fancies. Kids like this too sometimes for packed lunches for a change.

    Hi EL,

I take tins of soup to work that I can heat up in the microwave, along with a slice of bread (or toast - depending if I've got bread in the work freezer). If I was being really good, I would take HM soup to work to re-heat...

I also keeps tins of beans and mackerel in my drawer - that I can have on toast. I also find John West Tuna With A Twist packets (78p in Asda) handy to keep in my work drawer to have on bread or toast (although I'd probably be cheaper opening a tin of tuna and doing something with it - I'm usually not that organised - though still cheaper than buying shop sandwiches).

My favourite lunch is usually a big, fresh salad. Buy lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and spring onions on a Monday, keep them in the work fridge. Usually only have to top up the lettuce mid-week - everything else can stretch over 4 days. Top it up with some canned tuna or mixed bean salad and a fair lashing of salad cream. Can then treat myself to something nice on a Friday.

Occasionally I do get bored with this, but on those days (probably about once a week) I'll just buy soup and/or a sandwich from the local yummy sandwich shop.
    ;)

OooOOoh - some great ideas everyone - thanks so much!

I love salady beany things and also tortillas - next week will be much better.

Have been batch cooking and Mr EL sometimes takes small curry portions etc to work - but the jacket pots will come in v handy in the colder months I am sure.

Have (bad) cuppasoup at work right now...

    Any other ideas most welcome!

How much does everyone individually spend on lunch food so I can compare?
