Its a shame that there isnt a scheme where people could adopt/help elderly people who have no family. I lost my mum two years ago and whilst no-one will take her place i find myself looking at elderly ladies in tesco`s and thinking i wonder if they have got any-one who pops in. My children would love to visit a `Granny`This probably sounds crazy and obviously any-one interested would have to be checked by ss. i think you are a great neighbour and i wish you well with your new baby.

There is - I am an Age Concern volunteer and it was their "adopt a grandparent" schme they had a few years ago. Very rewarding - I see my friend Beryl minimum 1 hour a week. We have great fun eating cakes and drinking tea!

If anyone is interested then you can contact your local age concern for details.

That was rather thoughtless of me to put her name in the post and have now edited it. :o

    I can still see it....

I know we won't be able to identify her from a first name, but it's the polite thing to do.

I'm very glad she's on the road to getting a bit of help, well done to you for setting the wheels in motion.

  • Some good news on this situation.

Miss T has today agreed to be admitted to hospital and has just gone off in an ambulance, the DN & SW have been with her for the past couple of hours talking her through what will happen. They have managed to track down a relative by marriage, however the relative is 92 and in ill health herself. Miss T has agreed to me being kept informed on what is happening and has also asked that I look after her house while she is in hospital. The SW is going to arrange for a new bed to be delivered for Miss T and they will also be arranging for a carer for her when she comes home.

It was sad watching her get in the ambulance but I know that I have done the right thing.

  • Perhaps not timely enough for your query, but for others that are in the same situation in 2010....this could be the answer!

National charity, Abbeyfield has launched a Christmas scheme - COPE-at-Xmas.com – (Companionship Of People who are Elderly at Xmas) to ensure that older people who are alone or lonely don't spend this festive season by themselves. Older people (55+) throughout the UK can join Abbeyfield residents for a free Christmas lunch and even a free overnight stay between 24th December and 4th January at Abbeyfield sheltered houses taking part in the initiative. The cut-off date to register to take part is the 21 December 2010. :j

There is i used to do it. Its called a befriending service. You get matched to someone in your area who is lonely and go round and chat.

  • I'd just like to reiterate what other posters have said in that I think you've done a good thing in caring for your neighbour like this. More people should take a leaf from your book. Well done, and congrats on your baby x

I think you are right to be concerned. I do not know enough about how social services work to advise on what their approach should be to this situation. I hope someone with more knowledge of this maybe along shortly. Is she registered with the same doctors surgery as you? You could mention to the practice manager that you are concerned about this lady and why. They may have more swing with being able to get her help.
