Perhaps if you ,ahem, 'see' a rat or three running around in your garden, heading next door?
That might at least get environmental health involved...who might then pressurise the other department, at least that's what happens on life of grime when they have a rubbish hoarder.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Help the Aged and Age Concern might both be worth contacting. Hope someone helps her soon as just hearing her story is upsetting. Well done for wanting to do something about it, I know I would be concerned aswell. Get called 'Taxi' in my local village sometimes as I end up doing a lot for others more out of concern and 90% are those who have family but the family doesn't help/bother which frustrates me.
Wonder if it would be worth contacting her GP and asking them for advice, as they might be able to visit and do a referal. One day I might be more organised...........

My Gran lived in Salford, nowhere near the rest of the family and we had a similar problem trying to make Social Services understand the problem. I agree with deaththecat - you need to go higher than the idiots on the end of the phone who you've had to deal with.
Too many people in this world don't care about their neighbours, you sound like the type of person we would all like to live next to.
Sending someone round 'in a fortnight' is gross negligence - try asking them what they consider an emergency would be and why do you have to wait for something so extreme to happen before you notify as much media/government/local VIP's as you can, about their behaviour.
I know many do a good job but the instances like this which are so common really show the true nature of social services slavery to the almighty budget!0 -
I just wanted to say that I think you are a wonderful neighbour and I hope everything works out well. Make sure you let us all know.0

Just to add that you may want to consider writing to pressure on - state the facts in black and white - you have a record, and letters are much harder to avoid than phone calls. Great to see that people are looking out for others.0

I've tried going down the "theres a rat in her garden what am I gonna do?" route and was informed that because the house is privately owned the council would not do anything!
I will contact Help the Aged & Age Concern on Monday, hopefully I will be able to post something positive on Monday!

Its a shame that there isnt a scheme where people could adopt/help elderly people who have no family. I lost my mum two years ago and whilst no-one will take her place i find myself looking at elderly ladies in tesco`s and thinking i wonder if they have got any-one who pops in. My children would love to visit a `Granny`This probably sounds crazy and obviously any-one interested would have to be checked by ss. i think you are a great neighbour and i wish you well with your new baby.“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. Your really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.” Lucille Ball.0

ultimately her gp carries the responsibility (duty of care don't ya know).
my husband is a gp and he is appalled by the fact that an emergency to social services can mean a few days or weeks from the reported problem.
We are always being told to look after our neighbours. and when you do it seems you have to overcome these barriers too. good on you for perservering.0
