Frugal and Katholicos - hugs to you both.

Ummm....that C..mas word. It's not big in our world. My son (Grumpy the house elf) and three of my sisters children have birthdays in November. My sister and I buy each other's children birthday presents, but we gave up exchanging Christmas presents about 5 years ago. They get enough things as it is. I only buy my son's friends birthday presents too. The look of relief on their parents faces when I said I didn't do Christmas presents said it all.

Umm, and my really guilty secret....when my son was a baby, our house was a bit of a project and the wind blew in under the front door. I was fed up of watching his feet turn blue after he'd taken his socks off, so I bought 3 pairs of navy blue baby tights and he wore those under his trousers all winter. Watching him try to get them off was fairly good entertainment too :rotfl:
  • My boys wore tights until they were at school (in the winter), and never once questioned them, funny when they needed the loo though!!

young mummy ask at your local charity shop(if you have one and arent up a mountain) for a Christmas tree, I used to get loads in, may not be very posh but usually from people who get bored and chuck 'em away every year. Once its covered in decorations it will look fine!

I dont tend to bother with Christmas decorations personally - just put my cards up and thats it.

On years where I have decided to "do summat" - then I've put a small fallen tree branch in a pot and tied a few "bits and bobs" on it - decorations, red ribbons, etc. and put a few candles nearby. One cheap idea for decorating a Christmas tree is one I encountered at a pre-Christmas party at the house of an American friend some years ago. She told me about garlands of popcorn and cranberries interspersed and then hung round the tree - so I sat there with a needle and thread and duly made up a garland like that for her tree. Being really MSE - I expect its still possible to eat the popcorn and cranberries afterwards too:D
  • Ceridwen...i do that too with popcorn..trouble is my girls keep nibbling bits off so my garland looks like a rabid squirrel has got at it...all this talk of poaching reminds me of my gran and her uhum neighbour;)..he would poach rabbits..then she would hang them in the bathroom of her bungalow and gut, skin and prepare them for the pensioners on her little estate...god the smell was awful but i loved it when we had stews and pies..she also once made me a rabbit fur muff(no funny jokes please;))...my hubby used to go poaching too when we first got married and had 3 babies one after the other..he used to sell them to the local butcher...for extra pennies..the rest went in the freezer..girls never knew it was rabbit they were eating;):rotfl:..now they look at me gone out when i say you like rabbit..they swear up and down they don't..but they do and just don't know it..my little boy had tights on til he went to school too..very cute he was too:rotfl:...
I am happy flower today,i got a lay in,tea made for me,girls washed and dressed and now hubby is doing dinner so i can put my feet up..this creeping lark is quite good..better not string it out too much;)...
Have done my jobs though..sunday is my day for moving the furniture and hoovering under things...got my throws out the airing cupboard and they are being washed to pop on my aging sofa and chairs later..washed cushion covers too so it will be nice and clean for a while;) well til girls have choclate...
On the subject of cmas..i am looking forward to a frugal one...i think we got used to being able to do and buy what ever we wanted:o..so this yr its going to be a new experience for us.we have a tree and lots of deco's so no outlay there...told everyone no gifts from us this yr..and family are getting small personal gifts...my son wants clothes(easy) my girls are having one main present and a few little ones...and we have done secret santa with my other dd's and their partners..so only one present to buy hope it works out cheaper than buying seperate present and then choccys and drinks which is what i normally do..it should as i put £10 limit on it..up to them if they want to spend more but i'm sticking to a tenner...
My dd fionna has just sent my hubby(simon) a link for FB, that lets you join a kind of freccycle for your town..going to have a look later...
I do hope you all have a good day and try not to worry too much...
    take care all

  • Wow, I've only been away for a short while ( we eloped to get married) and so much has changed!!
Theres a lot that need hugs right now so here's one to all of you that do.
I'm not much of a Christmas decoration person either. Last year I didnt even send cards, just emailed evryone and told them I would make a donation to 2 charities of my choice instead. It felt good
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!
  • Congratulations northwest1965, I was an elopee too, still don't regret it to this day, 12 years later!!
