for a blind that lets draughts in around the sides, have u tried stick and sew velcro?
just cut a few bits up,sew the sew piece to the blind(or i guess u could glue it) and stick the self adhesive bit to the window frame or wall.
when blind is down just press the velcro together and it says snug to the window, ive done this in ds1 and 2 rooms,on their roller blinds and it cuts out draught and annoying chinks of light creeping into their rooms

Frugal, Katholicos My thoughts are with you both. It makes you numb with fear when those you love are under threat. I hope there will be a happy outcome for both your dads.

Good morning everyone, cold but sunny today.

Frugal and katholicos - what others have said. My thoughts are with you both and your families.

Youngmummy - you are not alone, there are families up and down the country worrying about paying the bills and Christmas coming. There are various threads on the Old Style forum for ideas on how to have a good Christmas on limited money, and how to stretch your food budget and still eat well. If you go on to the Debtfree Wannabe board, at the top there is a sticky for first time posters/SOA calculator. (You don't have to be in debt to visit that board, it's for anyone who wants to avoid debt as well) If you try doing the SOA it sets out your family income and expenditure in a user-friendly format. Post it on that board, asking for advice in making ends meet. The good peeps on there will be able to advise on cutting costs and maximising income, and they are just as friendly as the people on here.

In some ways, I won't be sorry if the spending cuts review has an impact on Christmas. For far too long it has just been treated as one great commercial opportunity for the retail trade to cash in and make as much money as possible, and many people have been caught up in a competitive race to spend as much as possible because they are frightened of being thought "mean" if their spending on presents doesn't match other peoples' expectations. People have often spent beyond their means and ended up in debt.

If tightened economic conditions means that families review their spending and get back to celebrating the real meaning of Christmas without all the commercialism, I will not be sorry. When you look at the enormous amount of rubbish on sale on which people in the past have been tempted to waste their money, putting the expense on credit cards to rachet up debt for months ahead, perhaps some element of common sense will now return.

My previous experience of corneal grafts is that they don't work very well. My boyfriend currently has his third corneal graft rejecting and will be taken back in soon to for his fourth transplant. The first time they did a partial graft that rejected near enough straight away,
    x x x

Sammy - what is the condition he has had a transplant for? I am hoping for a partial graft and do know that there can be a problem with rejection so that is, of course, worrying. It must be dreadful to have gone through several grafts, I really feel for him.
I think a lot depends on the condition and the particular surgeon so I am doing quite a bit of research into the possibilities near where I live. I have heard many cases where a partial transplant has been a complete success but also others like yours. Scary.
  • Katholics & Frugal - Big virtual hugs for you both. Its really hard, i know I've been there.:A

Youngmummy - Well, went through this myself, for presents, Mil & Fil - got together a photo album of the girls for them, complete with notes of age etc. Its such a personal present for them, what more could they ask for. If on the other hand they are totally materialistic then nothing you give them will be good enough (am assumong that they are proud grandparents) If not think of something that is veery personal and says I've really thought about this but on the other hand not expensive:D If you can knit or sew or cook there are loads of ideas over on xmas thread.
OH - just agree a small amount to spend (say£5) then have great fun choosing something. Because its such a small amount you don't have to be sensible about this, always wanted an action man, there you go. Like painting, have a painting by numbers set (do you get my drift, cheap, thoughtful and lots of fun).

Xmas lunch. - It is really just another sunday roast with a few extra veg. I find it sickening whn I see people going round this supermarket with there trolleys overflowing - why are they really feeding the 5000? Do you really need all that booze food etc or would it be better to treat yourselves to a tin of roses, some nibbles etc. You should also deffinately make it known that this year is tight IYSWIM,

Last but not least DON'T PANIC its just one day in the year, and it will be here again next year.:):) good luck:):)
    hells.
The problem with common sense is its not very common:rotfl:

I have never understood the hysteria over celebrating Christmas. While I am an agnostic I would rather attend a Watch Night service than go to any number of parties. The rampant commercialism of the whole thing is nauseating.
When I had small children I forbade the word until well into December and we had lovely low-key Christmasses. Now I live alone and would prefer to forget the whole thing. Its only October but marketing is in full swing so a large number of the population spends a quarter of a year planning on how to buy all the things they think they need. Ugh!

    Hi All

A very sad Frugal is writing to you all tonight. I just got home a short while ago from hospital.

I got a call from lovely StepMum at lunchtime to say that Dad wasn't good and an ambulance was coming for him :(:(:(. So I got over there fast and waited until ambulance picked him up and took him back in to hospital (big stroke a year ago and TIAs and a bleed on the brain since). We followed the ambulance up to A&E and I have to say, the ambulance crew and hospital staff were amazing. They recognised Dad as he had spent a long time with them last year. It was comforting, but sad at the same time, to know that they knew him but you could see on their faces that they were sad too to see him back again :'( GOD BLESS THE NHS!!!

StepMum is worried sick and had a few tears today but, I have no idea how, I kept it together. I think the thing for me is that Dad, altho is really really p!55ed off with his situation, is remaining cheerful which is what is keeping me going. He is a very strong and pragmatic man so I am trying to be like him in a way... if that makes sense. Anyway, I have to hold it together as SMum needs me.

Worst thing is, I got home late... really wanted to talk to someone but my friends are either out or asleep so I came on here...

Loved the poaching/roadkill stories and they made me smile, sad that SammyKaye had an accident, laughed at flowertotmum's dh and ds prank!! Sorry, that was funny and it put a smile on my face, but I would have been livid too.

Sorry, I know this post is off topic, but really needed to write down what happened today :'(

Frugal hun...hugs for you...if there is anything we can do to help i'm sure we will...we might not be there in the flesh but i'm with you..thinking of you and your lovely dad...
Be who you are, not what the world expects you to be..:smileyhea

    :jDebt free and loving it.
