We in here will always cope yes... but its the heartbreak behind the coping for some people. The ones who lose a job and can't get another one; who have to put up with lip/mistakes/wrong advice from overworked JC staff; who have to sit in unheated homes shivering because they cant afford the heating, etc etc. And they are not the people who caused any of this.
Not to mention people up to their eyes in debt - this is a much needed lesson for them but a painful one.

O i agree with all that...save and store its the only way...i keep trying to tell my daughters but they think i have gone loopy...make do and mend...only buy it if you have the money for it...no more wanting only needing neccessaties...most of us here at least can see it coming and are prepared for the worst..others i think have a huge shock coming there way...its those folks i feel sorry for...
Red doe your right listen to your instincts...i am and am prepared for the worst...
Parsonswife...roadkill...:rotfl:..if it was fresh enough then that was a good meal..just depends if it was squished..ewww....
Thinking about getting rid of 2 of my chickens as they are not laying anymore..has gone out the window..if they don't lay then i'm sorry they have a date with my oven and freezer...
I have today recieved my nectar point vouchers...was going to spend them on xmas treats but not now..i'm going to go and get essentials and add them to my little pile in the utility room...

Yep, Mardatha. that's the one. Brilliant place although does depend what's in when you go.
I like the idea of being prepared for the worst while hoping for the best, bluebag - otherwise just too scary and depressing and I don't want to live scared. And so far, I have found it's not the things you worry about beforehand that happen but the things that never crossed your mind. And it is all relative - whatever may come in the future, we are SO much better off than millions of people in other parts of the world or in the past here, who have/had to contend with war, civil war, famine and very little in the way of human rights. I used to watch the news, eg Ruanda, when the children were small and think how terrible it must be not to be able to protect your children. I am also privileged (and grateful) to live where I do - so although I have also noticed big hikes in food prices and can't see how we are ever going to be debt free, I am also inclined to count my blessings, if that makes sense.
Although I agree with what you say too Mardatha - have had some miserably humiliating experiences claiming eg housing benefit, in the past and DD1 and I living in outdoor clothes inside because of trying to save on coal and only light the fire in the evening.Jan 2011 GC £300/£150.79 (2 adults, 2 teens, working dog, includes food/cleaning/toiletries)0 -
Many of us grew up in austerity and so we are used to it but many of the younger generation in particular, have had a fairly easy ride through life and what is happening will hit them like a ton of bricks. They will not have not had time to adapt as the measures have to be brought in very quickly. Yes of course we must get the uk out of the very deep dark hole but I feel a bit resentful deep down that it was none of my doing and nor of millions of others. In the meantime we will be swept along in the tsunami and hit by flotsam and jetsam along the way. Being prepared will be like wearing body armour.0

Hi guys.
I try not to worry about money what will be will be we doing are best and living within budget, paying off debts and not adding new ones.
really pleased with dinner party I threw last night and was quite cheap in end.
went to meat machine spent 27quid on meat but brought tonnes like 24 sausages and 24 thick rashers of bacon for fiver each.
Got some steak peices for casserole, used half bottle of red wine sainsburys basics seems to be cheapest red and served with irish champ mash.
That was main course.
for starters was white wine rissoto with chicken and chicken stock made from boiled chicken carcass and added peices bacon was yummy and quite cheap.
definatly recceomend rissoto as good chicken carass recipie as alternative to soup.
A big house on main road sells homemade jam and bramley apples from their garden so for 2lbworth for 50p and made a crunchy crumble with oats served with icecream.
Or dinner guest was very impressed I made it all from scratch.
Has some leftover for today so lunch me and 2kids had rissoto.
dinner baby had more rissoto with added sweetcorn and grated chese.
me and hubby had more been stew, mash and added sweetcorn.
eldests had sweetcorn, 1bakes potato cut up and some chicken from bird i roasted with bisto which she loves so been great value still got chicken in fridge for nextr 2days sandwiches although did debate doing a curry.
Got some stewing steak left to cook as plan to make a pie to go with chips.
only dillemema is suppost to be doing roast lamb tommorow so really pie could be pushed to mon but got some mozzarella dated 14th think ok to use still and was going to make mon pizza night.
was going to do sausage caserole and freeze in portions and serve with frozen wedges later in week.
Want to ensure we got enough in freezer to fall back on.
hubbys doing farmfoods tuesday I think .
so far we spent about 70quid oout of 250 budget.
Think we out of freezer bread so need to bake a loaf.
Do find string bread flour quite pricey over a quid in co-op.
Still got lots of normal plain self raising as brought tonnes of morrisions value nearly 3months ago now.
Need golden syrup as was going to try homemade oat bars for daughters lunch box.
Been sunny but cold here did take kids to park but babys ill full of a cold bless her.
Got birthday party to attend tommrow and no idea what present to get , hope dont rain as got to walk there and its least halfhours walk.
Our dinner guest made me realise how lucky we are as she arrived in new porshe hubby was jealous, owns big detached house but shes facing redundancy, recently lots baby and split from her bloke and she seemed to say we so lucky as we get on so well been married 6years this year, have 2kids another on way makes me feel sad as sometimes people think money and spending brings happyness but Its the people in your life that bring true happyness.
Things still tough but we coping. Hoping to hear about hubbys job in next couple of weeks.
Bills still seem neverending and feel no way prepared for xmas but trying not to stress already got some cheap ideas kids will love.pad by xmas2010 £14,636.65/£20,000::beer:
Pay off as much as I can 2011 £15008.02/£15,000:j
new grocery challenge £200/£250 feb
KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON:D,Onwards and upward2013:)0 -
Flowertotmum myself, DH and hairdresser were all up in arms about your veg today. Have just stopped laughing about your DH's prank although if it was my DH I think the repenting would have to last for a good few days.:rotfl:
Have been shopping today for bread flour, Allisons 3kg bags were all sold out in Mr M's. I had the last four unripped bags from Mr A's then went to Aldi and stocked up on castor sugar, plain and SR flour. The two big supermarkets had plenty of bags of the much more expensive smaller bags. Also bought two very large bags of pasta and 4 large lidded plastic boxes to store them all in in the garage. I feel like I am finally a proper part of the preparing for winter MSE family.I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order.

I know Mardatha - my son is out of work - has been for 9 weeks or more and not yet received anything from JSA or anything else. They do keep messing up his claim. Fortunately he had saved a little but that has now run out.
However, having said that, I have to confess that I have never received any sort of state help and would have real difficulty claiming any.
I do understand that there are some cases where people cannot help themselves through ill health or other unfortunate circumstances, but also I have always believed that the way I, personally, live my life is my problem not the government's.
Yes, of course there are people who need help through no fault of their own and, hopefully, they will be protected.
Even with my own son I have some reserve - he gave up his job - the circumstances were pretty horrendous - but I have a conviction that you have to stick with what may be an unpleasant situation however much it hurts so am a little ambivalent about the fact that he has yet received no benefits.
Nothing is simple is it?
I have an eye condition which could mean I will lose my sight unless I receive a corneal graft. I won't go into the minutiae of the errors, stupidity etc I have met with in the Health Service. My life has changed hugely because of this and my income reduced markedly as a result.
Having said all that I still firmly believe that one (I) make my own destiny and I should just damned well get on with it.0 -
