I hope your hubby does more than put the shelves up! Poor you - thats not a nice trick to play even if there were only joking.

Unfortunatly people do steal from allotments, we used to have a bloke who sold veg at the car boot and he suddenly disappeared, heard a few rumours that he was caught stealing it from allotments, not on the wirral but further a field so he apparently wouldnt be caught selling it. Makes you wonder and we havent bought any from the car boot since

  • This is what we have been doing for the last 18 months and it's amazing how useful these vouchers can be for food. Lots of survey sites offer supermarket vouchers or even paypal payments that can be put into your bank account for food or spent on discounted food stores with short dated food online.

Don't we get resourceful when we have to?! ;)

I get paypal credits rather than supermarket vouchers from Lightspeed when I do surveys as it uses less points for the same amount of cash, trying to find some other survey sites that are good and offer surveys often, do opinium (think its called) and am halfway to getting my £25 chq xx

Pink winged, I was shocked and curious about your 'roadkill' then I had a good laugh. Vegetarian roadkill - what ever next :rotfl:

So sad about the theft of food flowertotmum, like everyone else said if they were hungry and asked I know most people would help.

As for the flour, well good job we are wise people isn't it. Im off to Aldi on Monday, their flour (SR AND plain) is in smaller bags but quite cheap - or was??? I will post my potato rolls recipe later, given to me by some very wise Pennypinchers - John and Irma Mustoe - they used to publish a magazine and I wrote several articles for it. Do you think by any chance the shops are putting the price up on bread flour as demand has risen? and they have seen a way to make more money from us? Me cynic - nah, realist!

...and one can understand where she's coming from. I long ago made a mental note to myself that if I decide to go off on a self-employed kick ever that I would stay "solo" - rather than ever employ anyone (bar fit "golden oldies" and anyone who could produce medical proof they'd never go off on maternity leave). I am not at all sure that maternity leave provisions HAVE helped women actually - unless they work in the public sector (where that has been allowed for in the calculations....). I do wonder how small private employers deal with this thorny issue in a way thats fair to the employee AND also fair to their business..... I really wouldnt want to go there in trying to ask an employee whether they really meant it when they said they would be coming back from maternity leave or no......agh!!!!

Just had to leave a comment re maternity leave. My son and 2 friends set up their business 18 months ago, and doing well enough to want to employ someone else. They would like to employ a young woman who they know would be a real asset to the company - their dilemma, is one of the first things she wanted to know - what are maternity provisions - alarm bells start to ring. They need her, not the disruption of taking on an employee, then having to pay her, and someone else whilst she takes maternity leave.

Hi ceridwen, I know it's not exactly what you asked for, but this is how I make what we Irish call potato bread. It isn’t an exact recipe so I haven’t included measurements, but it is very easy and cheap to make, and very soon you’ll get a feel for how stiff the dough should be.

Mashed potato – I use left over rather than make it specially
Butter – a good couple of knobs
    A pinch of salt
    Plain flour

-Warm up the left over mash

    -Add a little salt

-Add the butter and stir through until completely melted

-Start to add the flour and mix it into the mash (I use a large metal spoon to start off with, but usually end up using my hands)

-Continue to add flour until the mix feels like a stiff dough

    -Divide the dough into balls

-Roll into circles that will fit into your frying pan (about 5mm thick)

    -Cut the circle into quarters

-Lightly dust both sides with flour

-Preheat the frying pan (or flat griddle if you have one) to a medium heat

-Dry fry the potato bread (no oil or butter). At this stage you just want to cook the dough rather than fry it.

-Turn occasionally. It’s ready when it’s beginning to brown in patches.

    -Cool on a wire rack.

At first just try making one piece at a time so that if the consistency isn’t quite right you can knead more flour into your dough.

It will keep in the fridge for a couple of days and freezes very well. I normally make it in batches and freeze.

For variations, add black pepper or chives

To cook: Preheat frying pan to hot, fry in butter and serve immediately or grill and serve spead with butter.

    Urgh afternoon all

Not a very well Sammy Kaye :(:(:(:(

Went to watch my ben playing football and he plays one end of the pitch but the main pitch had a match on too that I had my back too.

Happily watching Ben and was suddenly knocked unconscious by a goal missing football - I was stood behind the net though and it hit me full force in the back of the head. Seriously it felt like if it had decapitated me it would of hurt less!

Thankfully I was stood on a field though and the floor decided to wake me up. All I can really remember is seeing Owen as he ran over and picked me up. Although kind of thankful it belted me otherwise it would have been Holly getting the ball straight in the face and thank god I wasn't holding her she was in her buggy!

Either way had both coaches run to may aid as well as Owen and the other mums. Just had to sit on the floor to come round. Shamed.

Although - bless his heart - the player who had belted the ball came running over apologising profusely. He was only about 17. So Owen has been monitoring me all afternoon now. Feel fine if not a bit delicate - no sickness/dizziness/vomitting etc jst feel a bit delicate and was shaking afterwards but think that was more shock.

So am off now to chill out in front of TV and watch 'the mummy' with sweeties with Benjie and Holly wriggling on floor - sent Owen to his mothers to help his dad - its sweet hes so concerned but hes getting on my wick as if Im about to die any second!

Either way - will be back on tomorrow when head doesn't feel so delicate!

Oh adn Ben scored two goals and his team won 11 -4. They haven'tlost a match yet! :j
    Time to find me again

Have to tell you all. At the grand age of 57 and three quarters I have just been offered, and accepted, a full time proper job! I'd reconciled myself to the scrap heap because of my age, but I got it because I have the experience.

    Can't believe it. I've been looking for A G E S.
Well done Jamanda! I too was offered a job yesterday after a year of searching, applying and interviewing. I am not much younger than you and I was seriously thinking that I was on the scrap-heap too due to my age.

See? There is hope and there are employers out there who value age and experience!

Congratulations to you both - BRILLIANT news!!
