I want an old stone cottage on the side of a mountain in the west highlands. I want a huge coal/wood/peat burner in it; I want a solid old stone barn for my chickens; and a sheep with her lamb; and maybe possibly a Jersey house cow. Sigh. And the lottery win to run it with. A couple of wee cats to talk to and a collie for a helper.
    ...
Oh and possibly a huge hot swimming pool in another barn. :rotfl:

You forgot summat - a wee side cottage - for your virtual friends on MSE to come and visit with you:rotfl:

Ceridwen - it's so funny that you changed your signature to that wiki link....I was just thinking a couple of days ago "I wonder what the word ceridwen actually means, if anything?" and I googled it, and read that wikipedia link! Very interesting, never heard of the legend before.

Hmmm, Ceridwen, Mardatha and Sammy have all got me thinking about what my "des res" would be. I guess I'm almost afraid to define it because then it will feel like settling for second (or tenth) best because I doubt I will ever be able to afford what I want. Plus like Cerdiwen I have about 3 different ideas of what I'd like. My current favourite idea is a kind of ecocommune. But I'd want there to be enough space for me to have a bit of privacy. Wouldn't mind a heated pool in a barn either! :D Wonder if such a place exists?

I thought your posts about sparing a thought for the children with nothing were beautiful Mardatha and Jackie. :A They put my money worries all in perspective really. Must put my thinking cap on about what I could do to help, not much I guess. One year a woman stopped me in town on Christmas Eve and asked me for money to buy a chicken for Christmas dinner. I hadn't much money at the time because I was supporting ex and myself on a tiny wage but I had bought everything I needed and on impulse gave her my last 20 quid. I was feeling quite good about what I'd done but then she asked for more. I still remember how upset I was about that, left me feeling wary of giving to people on the street. I felt like I'd been "had". So now I pick some charities to give to but sometimes you hear bad things about them from homeless people though. I will have to figure out what I can give this year. Last year I asked for donations to charity instead of pressies but my nearest and dearest weren't keen so I asked them to give me nothing and to get themselves something they wanted instead. I may be broke but I have more than enough and I'd rather the money wasn't wasted on more stuff for me to declutter! :D Gosh that sounds so ungrateful now I see the words written down.

Hope your dad gets better soon frugal, :)

Mardartha - I have run childrens groups in some of the poorest areas of Liverpool and always struggled with seeing Christmas through some of the childrens eyes, especially when my children got so much. Its why our Christmas party was always free to all the kids (took me ages persuading our group) and I made sure it was an amazing party- I used to owe all sorts of favours to people afterwards, as I got them involved. Its probably the only thing I miss about the post if I am honest. We usually now buy extra gifts and donate them to local radio stations to distribute, but how successful that is at reaching the kids I do not know. Many families will sell on the gifts I would guess to pay for drugs etc leaving the kids with nothing, hence why my emphasis was on giving them an experience of a wonderful party with food and a small gift as they left.

We had a dream once but sadly we never had the money to make it come true, but where we live now is a close to it as we could hope to get. We have a cosy cottage (if it was mine it would be cosier) enough land to grow most of our veg needs, would love a little more for fruit trees and a few chickens, but thankful for what we have got.

I have a good store cupboard so if things get sticky for a while as I know they will do, we will have enough to eat, the freezer is almost full too.

I have stuffed the chicken breast with apricot, sage and onion stuffing, the other two have been diced up and are presntly cooking in a splash of brandy, chicken stock, onions, garlic and mushrooms. There is enough for 2 meals for us, will seperate it into two tupperware boxes when it has cooled off. It will just need the yogurt added when I re-heat it later.

I am going to cook apple strudel for dessert.
    Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.

Ceridwen is my real, given name - goes down well in my adopted Geordie-land - I shorten it, obviously! We have some very interesting names on my mother's side. I had an Aunty Blod (short for Blodwen) I have an Aunty Myfanwy, an Aunty Mair (rhymes with higher but one syllable and a slight roll on the R - the Welsh language is strange!), and an Eirwen (Eir like higher etc....). She's generally known in England as wen, as the Eir sound doesn't exist in the English language. So really, I got off lightly!! My Gy (grandma) was called Rosina - not very Welsh at all!
  • Frugal - Hope your Dad is a little better x

On the topic of children not getting much or anything for christmas we donate a couple of toys each December to the Radio city appeal, its based in Liverpool but we donate at a shop in Birkenhead. The boys have £2 each and have to pick two things in poundland each, one for a boy and one for a girl. they spend ages choosing - trying to decide what another child would play with. we explain why were doing it but I dont think they understand properly as they are lucky enough to have things.
