    CERIDWEN ---

I would LOVE that. I think that is what my £1,000 bank savings will actually go towards. I'd love to manage to get a foot on the housing ladder as I've never had a family home and been brought up in RAF housing most my life. Although I have been watching 'Giles and Sue live the good life' and must say I quite fancy that! lol

Hmmm......well that prize was virtually worked out in detail for you then Sammy wasnt it? It virtually matched to the £ what you needed to get rid of debt and just get a 4 figure amount of money stashed safely. The tv was nearly as decided and then there was that game. It matched your specifications pretty darn well there all round:D

You've certainly been very sensible with your plans for the money.

Would it maybe be something to think about to put £100 of that £1,000 savings money into Premium Bonds and the remaining £900 gets stashed in a savings account? That way - there is the chance there if this run of luck holds of maybe getting a house-size win...

I "visualised" my way through to getting a house - the one I have doesnt "match" the one I was picturing:( - but I DID get a house at any rate:D.

Perhaps we ought to light a few candles together and picture two "Good Life" houses for ourselves?:D:rotfl:. I assumed as I grew up that I would have a "Giles and Sue Live the Good Life" style house - that one they have (in a suitable road) would do for me. I'd just add a conservatory (and my solar roof panels) and I'd be good to go...:rotfl:. Or a nice eco house in suitable eco community would be nice too....(Note to self - maybe thats where I "went wrong" last time - as I couldnt make up my mind whether to visualise a "Good Life" house or one of the modern 4 bedroom "executive" style houses....hence I got one that was different to both styles.......).

    Right....where's those candles?......

Sounds familiar! :) our JCP entrance seems to have a group of dirty, scruffy people who seem to spend the day smoking, drinking, fighting, shouting and being lairy. Our security staff can't get rid of them as they are outside the premises and the police can't because they aren't commiting a crime (apart from being obnoxious) Not surprisingly many customers hate having to come in as they have to run the gauntlet of getting pass these people :(

The majoe flaw to this is that jobs are scarce in general - and 16hrs per week jobs are like hens teeth!

    Very offputting...

One plus point about the proposed new benefit system is the one that it will profit anyone to be in work - whatever number of hours per week they do. Looks like it will get rid of my personal bugbear of having to work at least 16 hours per week (as a childless person):D.

I think there are elements of this that are pretty farsighted actually - as jobs are getting scarcer in our modern technological societies and this trend is still continuing. I think the Government is actually planning for what-work-there-is to get "shared around more fairly" - but, to do that, it is necessary for everyone to know they will be better off in work regardless of number of hours done.

What does puzzle me is where people having a stable enough/properly paid enough job to get a mortgage comes into the thinking? I dont see how that is to happen....

    MORNING ALL:D

For all concerned. Boyfriend is not getting a say with this little windfall. When I rang him I said he was not having bike bits/bikes/cars etc. I told him I would get him debt free - which will make us £200 better off from him too so it will still help us and I've told him nothing else on credit ever. If we want something we will save for it. The money is going to be put into my savings account and so I will be the one controlling it until I open a new savings account to home it once I've looked into interest rates etc.

    S

Well done on this Sammy. Stick to your guns! I think you're handling your windfall in a sensible way. Clearing your debts and having some spare money every month will be a huge relief for you. Don't allow yourself to get manoeuvred into debt again. Stick the residue into an account in your own name and keep adding to it as you can afford to. Boyfriend must start taking his share of responsibility for your family finances.

I seriously hope I'm not speaking out of turn but yesterday you seemed to think you had less debts jointly than today. I hope that you have not had a nasty surprise from Owen in that direction.

Are you absolutely certain that paying off his debts is the best thing to do? It seems a very short time ago that you were planning to split and if there is even the remotest danger of that happening, it would be very unwise to lose your nest egg. Also if you pay down his debts will he give you more money for housekeeping/the family finances or will he fritter the extra on stuff just for himself

I'm really sorry if I have offended you by asking such impertinent questions but I can't help being a little worried that he will continue to be financially irresponsible and that you will therefore not be able to make the most of your windfall
  • Congratulations sammy-kaye. I think that you thoroughly deserve this. What a fantastic start for the new year to be debt free :j

Still feeling sick today (antibiotics for chest infection) and it's making me grumpy :(. Have just discovered OH left the chest freezer lid open all night. It must have been cold in the garaGe last night becausE the only thing that has defrosted is half a packet of pitta breads. The fact that the freezer is full to bursting must have helped.
Having finally owned up to owing up to £20k on cc's (have remortgaged to sort that out), and me cuting up the cc's OH is already back in debt to the tune of £300 on his bank account  as he did not finish paying off one of the cc's because he was waiting for an overpayment cheque from another one to clear it with. I thought that he had finally agreed that he would be honest about money but it feels like I am fighting a loosing battle. Luckily we have the £300 to pay off the debt and he is in town this morning closing the account. He asked me to take charge of the finances to stop him running up anymore debt but it is very difficult when he's not being honest.
Part of the problem is he is depressed but will not recognise it. He has been suffering on and off for the last three years since his dad died. He will not see anyone about it. Even the kids 14/17 have asked why dad is so sad.
All I can do is support him but even though I love him as much as I do it is very difficult not to get angry with him sometimes.

Nausea staring to pass of now so will get some more wsashing done and on the line. It's cold but there is a bit of a breeze so you never know.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

Oh Sammy that is the best news I've heard in such a long time, I cried with happiness when I read your post! You really deserve it - talk about what goes around comes around!

Totally agree with what everyone has said about what to do with the money (not that it's any of our business!) and it sounds as though you're, as usual, going to be very sensible :)

Well we're off out to the football this afternoon (got free tickets) - I don't really want to go but my OH loves football and doesn't know anyone else to invite. Hope it's not too cold out!

OH's just got back from the launderette - we have a washing machine but no drier, and the mountain of dirty/wet laundry was stressing me out big time! So he took three loads of clean (wet) laundry up the road to get it dry. Dried it all for £3 and I must say that was £3 well spent! The towels are lovely and fluffy too :D

If you spend over £40 in asda at the moment, you get a voucher book "worth £40", money off various things. The current one runs out on the 28th Nov and not sure we'll go again before then, shame as there's a couple of things that are worth having - £1 off Tilda basmati rice, £1 off olive oil, etc. All branded stuff, but in some cases prob takes the price down below the asda's own price. Mind you - my cupboards are bulging, I'm not sure I can possibly store any more food at the moment after my AF order.....!

    Have a good day everyone

Not had time to come in here much lately - am knitting at full speed for xmas. Cat, thats very good advice and I know SK wont take it the wrong way. Every woman with kids should have some money tucked away , in secret preferably, then the man cant lay his hands on it LOL- not sexist in any way, just that it's easier for a man to get work than a lady with children!
Re the new universal benefit etc- the bit about "making it always pay to be in work rather than on benefit" could also mean " we're taking away most of your money unless you work" !

I had noticed a difference of about £1,400 between original debt estimate and the later one and wondered a bit..but assumed summat had been overlooked originally.

I think Sammy and everyone else will take your post above in the spirit in which it is meant. It is obvious that it is meant kindly:). It is a valid point to make - and I'm guessing Sammy will be back soon explaining.

I think Sammy can see that we are routing for her to get best possible use out of this money and we can see she is determined not to waste a penny of it.

Ceridwen - Does this mean people will be able to accept jobs at, say, 10 hours a week and still get WFTC and such? The whole thing confuses me!
