Oh my, where did I go wrong, I obviously brought my parents up all wrong, I such a bad daughter!!:rotfl:

I have just spoke to my mum on the phone and told her I had been to Asda to stock up on flour and store in big box, as flour prices are rising as a result of wheat shortages, she replied, thats ok it wont affect us we dont use flour anyway??:eek::eek: I tried to explain that its not just flour its flour based products too, but she really didnt get it!!

At least I now have a huge Ikea plastic box with about ten bags of flour in store already and will buy more later this week.

Read somewhere last night that Child benefit will be stopping for over 16 yr olds, this will hit us hard, as my DD16 is still in school and would have still been entitled though college too. Have been costing up college and travel etc, and I have to say I am very worried.

That CB change would affect us as well as DS1 is 16 next year (in yr11 at the moment) and planning on going to college,as we live rurally with no decent public transport it will cost us over £30 per week in petrol to get him to college.
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
    So we’re empty nesters.
    Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman

Me too Kidcat, my DD is 16 and has just started 6th form, it costs me £15 a week in bus fares alone!

It's not just the child benefit though, will it affect other benefits too because with some you only get them for children if you receive child benefit for them?

DD16 is considering becoming a vet, this would mean she has to attend a college about 12 miles away and get the official college bus, this costs £400 per term!! To be paid each term upfront. Added to costs of books etc I am really scared.

back to weddings - someone mentioned having a late wedding - that is what I chose - mainly for costs but also to make it easier on the kids - not such a long day etc. Just had one big evening do after the service that everyone was invited to. The really good thing about it was that there wasnt a two tier guest list - everyone felt equally included - and loads of people commented how nice it was that we had valued everyone the same!! (Hadnt really been a factor in my thinking:D) Allowed people travelling to only need one nights stay, as they travelled on the morning without panicking.

Been up all night with DS6 who is still poorly, trouble is he is full of beans now whereas I am dropping!

And on an OS note - prices are shooting up daily now - was in Asda today and cat biscuits have gone up 24p ber bag:eek::eek:
Dryer on again today as it raining again today and washng basket had become an avalanche again - only cleared it Saturday! I can see my electric meter gleefully whirring round. :)

hadnt even considered that, I assume that the govt doesnt expect that just because they are 16 they no longer eat??

I think they expect them to be climbing up chimneys or working down the mines by then!
  • prices definitely going up in asda - i went to cooltrader freezer store, then pound shop, then asda for my shop. got a week til payday but ive managed to fill cupboards and freezer for £35. worrying so much about these cuts tomorrow. i know it will be a lot of public sector and whitehall jobs but i worry so much about a knock on effect. my husband works for an outsourcing company and his current work is safe til march next year, then all being well his current work will extend for another year at least. my employment is ok for now, but im now thinking hard about finances as we have a few bits of get paid off here and there. need to get a contingency fund sorted i think.

Oh yes kidcat our wedding was also an afternoon/evening thing, the ceremony was at 4:30pm so people weren't bored of a long drawn out day! It also meant only one meal and some little snacks and cake later which saved.

Well after all my complaints about our useless, freezing cold utility extension thing I got a call today saying the landlord wants to replace it! Half of me is happy because it's in a state and needs replacing but I'm concerned about the disruption and where we'll put the fridge freezer and washing machine whilst they do it and how we'll actually arrange to move them. Also the door that goes into there isn't a proper outside door and has a big gap, I fear both security and THE COLD whilst they're doing the work!

It's what has worried me the most, isn't CTC only paid for the children you're getting child benefit for?

I don't get CTC, my OH had been on incapacity benefit for years (before CTC existed) and he gets money on his benefit for both me and DD and it's topped up with IS. They did send a letter a few years ago asking if we wanted to change onto CTC but we just stayed as we were because it was easier and I was worried something would get messed up. On all the forms we fill in it always asks about dependants and children that recieve child benefit.

It's the same with housing benefit or council tax benefit, they always ask if you're receiving child benefit.

  • I certainly remember that my mum used to get more housing benefit when I was still eligible for child benefit than she did after I wasn't. It dropped significantly without a 'child' on the claim (I was 19 when it stopped as I was still in full time education so they used to pay until then.)

Some of the cheaper weddings sound wonderful, I love the sound of the park one. I have never married but think that it should be the people you care about most coming together to witness you making a commitment to each other, not a competition on how many people you can call friends for a day, how can a couple have hundreds of friends?
My favourite wedding was a friend I met through Gingerbread, her hen night we went to somebody's flat with a few bottles of wine & took some food each, about 10 of us went to the ceremony then to a restuarant for a meal, heavily discounted as one of the girls families owned it. The evening was spent at someone else's house having a drink playing silly games & eating pizza.
Another friend of mine always reckons her favourite wedding was a barn dance, done on the cheap. Everyone joined it & there was no his & her side divide. I guess that it's difficult to be formal when you're throwing strangers round a barn & sitting on bales of hay.
£14k for a ring? That would be a fantastic deposit on a flat.
It's not quite so cold today. I got an eiderdown out last night to put over the bottom of the bed to keep my feet warm, as they were like blocks of ice last night, I was so hot I almost ignited or melted. I got a fab bargain a while ago, 6 vintage eiderdowns along with some other stuff for £30, sold 3 quilts & other stuff for over £200 & still got 3 left, if anyone can get their hands on some cheaply they are brilliant. I found one in a charity shop as well for £4, unused.
I still haven't put my heating on but it's getting pretty miserable.
I think I'll get the thermal vests out for tomorrow morning, bought at Asda for £1 each after last winter. I could do with more thermal socks Poundland 3 pairs in a pack. For some reason though they had mens or childrens but not womens so are only good for indoors as too big to go inside shoes.
Has anyone seen cheap fingerless gloves?
Anyone who still needs knitwear, take a look at the mens section of charity shops, in the last few weeks I've picked up some pure wool chunky knits for my brother for around £3 each, most unworn, if they're baggy, great for layering. Jumpers, not brothers. Men often don't seem to feel the cold so much as women so whether they were all gifts & too hot for them I don't know, I must take a look for some big ones for me, as I hate wearing coats and as I only really go out to dog walk, or charity shop, I feel too bundled up & stiff in coats unless it's raining.
I've just thought, if you cut the sleeves off I wonder if they would make leg warmers for little ones? The body could then be used as a waiscoat.
I started to knit squares a couple if months ago & had intended to make up a large waiscoat thing but my 2 little squares won't do much, if I didn't spend so much time on MSE maybe I'd have got more done but typing does keep your hands warm.
Off to walk the dog in a minute.
Hope everyone's having a good day.
