Could you not pick up a paper from the store, read it in the coffee shop and then leave it there? You've not left the premises with the paper, so aren't guilty of theft?
    Happy chappy
  • Would never eat in a Tesco's cafe, they make more than enough profit without me adding to them

Would never go back to a Sainsbury's cafe as it was way too overpriced

Only shop where i would use their cafe instead of waiting til i got home is the Co-Op. The jacket potato serving was so large that i couldn't finish it, wasn't too expensive and the one in Stirchley Birmingham still had the newspapers to read.

Morning everyone - thanks for posting here. :j You've just solved all my problems with my local Tesco cafe, Talbot Green.
Three weeks ago me and six of my friends all went for a Sunday breakfast and it was diabolical. Cold food rude service and you could only have ketchup if you paid 25p a sachet for it. I don't mind paying but by the time we all paid our 25p it would've been cheaper to buy it from the shop floor!
Thanks to you all, I now I know why it was so bad - sub contracted:mad:  caterers!
I asked the manager and he refused to say the cafe had been taken over, just that Tesco were experiencing problems!!!!
Problems alright - we haven't been back since - they must be losing money :T hand-over-fist! Serves 'em bl@@dy right!

In addition, I couldn't believe it yesterday when I returned a £4 block of substitued cheese that I hadn't ordered........................and it got promptly chucked in the bin.................I've felt guilty about it ever since!!!!!!!!:o:o:o:o:o

This is because anything that is frozen or refridgerated cannot be returned to the store, unless it is faulty or somehow tesco's fault (like you didn't want your cheese substitued). Once a product likes this leaves the store, it cannot go back out on the shelves, so it will be wasted!
  • The teso I worked at had their cafe taken over by Eurest. It was terrible. Customers were always complaining about the food and the service, and they'd come to the desk to complain and I wouldn't be allowed to take the complain, as it was no longer our cafe, so I had to get the cafe staff to come to the desk and take their complaint!

In our store the security guards would stop people doing this, as the cafe wasn't part of the tesco store anymore, so anything had to be paid for before going into the coffee shop. They often went in and took magazines off people, the cafe shop staff would phone us up and tell us to send the security guard. Though they did offer newspapers, they would just stop people with magazines. They always had to get a security guard cause at the end of the night when the coffee shop was closed, a little old guy used to always let himself in and steal anything that wasn't nailed down, lol! We had to take everything from papers to sugar and cutlery off him!

Yeh - we talked about it and thought it must be something like this. Would it have been returned to the shelves if it had been refused at the door rather than returned later? Or are Tesco setting themselves up for lots of wasted products by inappropriate substitutions, in which case they should they have a no substitution policy on refrigerated/frozen goods?

No, if you return it immediatly with the driver the product is put back onto sale as soon as it returns to the store.

There is also a list of perfect items that have to be substitued even if you dont want them to be. Cheese used to be in this catogory, although i think it has slipped out now (I should know really but cant remember!!)

Not true. As many have already said the reason there are no papers in the cafes anymore is due to the fact that they are now operated by Eurest, thats the only reason. It has nothing to do with Tesco anymore.

Hmmm - as a customer I don't really care if it's Tesco's, Eurest or the Mr Men providing the service. It's branded with Tesco all over it, it's in a Tesco store and therefore Tesco should be taking a VERY active interest in the customers views on the service (Not that this reflects on you personally of course Princessa, it's management who are at fault generally)

It's my pet hate about sub-contracting to large companies, the emphasis is on maximising profit by driving down costs, rather than maximising profit by increasing customer satisfaction and numbers.

Personally I'd rather make 50p from a single customer 100 times because they keep coming back, rather than £1.50 from that person once! To put it totally in context Savvy and I have been back in that Tesco (and others) loads of times since, many times around breakfast and lunch and not once have we considered going back because of the feeling of being totally ripped off.

Wow - that turned into a rant didn't it :o

Thanks for that - I guess it's because they can guarantee(ish) the temperatures it is kept at. Even though they can't guarantee they didn't drop it in a puddle :p:D
