You asked for peoples opinions. Everybody has said 'go'. You don't get the opportunity to go to New York everyday. That said if you really don't want to go, then don't. What i think most people have said is that your girlfriend is well within her rights to feel cheesed off, in her shoes i'd dump you. So it depends whether that bothers you or not. Simples.0

An excuse? I am thinking of our financial security.
You asked, I answered.
Financial security by overpaying mortgage and loosing all the money you already paid our for that trip???????
That is very long term view... Well, the overpaying mortgage is, so it logicaly doesn't have much to do with the fact she was made redundant, because then the short term financial security would matter.
Because it doesn't make any sense it looks like an excuse. And that is how woman sees it.
P.S.: and when people say "but" and you come up with new reason it looks like you have no heart. So I wouldn't mention to her new reasons either.0 -
So g/f has been made redundant. Do you not think she could do with you by her side, giving her tea and sympathy and reassuring cuddles and advice?
I'm sorry but you are going down in my estimation as a worthy b/f by the minute.0 -
I've been supporting her, I was helping her as best I could when she was going through redundancy, bit hard thoguh when she is on other side of the world. Also took her her away when she came back in July0

Ok, so it boils down to this;
option 1 - you go to NY, lose 1 1/2 wks pay, GF is happy
option 2 - you don't go, lose the money you've already spent (which doesn't seem to matter), have money to overpay your mortgage, but GF is unhappy

I have decided, I am going to go to New York. Wish I hadn't mentioned it to gf but other things in my life were getting on top of me and wasn't looking forward to going away.0 -

I feel a bit bad now that we all jumped to the conclusion that you couldn't be bothered to go, when you were just worrying about things. The risk of posting on a forum I suppose.
I am glad you have decided to go, definitely sounds like that is what your GF wants from her initial reaction. Try not to worry and enjoy the holiday with GF.
Could you do a few extra hours a week to make up some of what you could have earned while away? Or anywhere you could make cuts for the short term while your GF looks for work - I'm just trying to think of things that will have you worrying less!!0 -

:T That's brilliant!
I think that, for the good of your relationship, you've made the right decision. Your GF will appreciate that you've put her first.
