Actually its 5% on all domestic supplies - regardless of quantity! But remember it wasn't too long ago kerosene was under 9ppl!! (less than 20 years ago) I wouldn't rush out to buy a large tank just yet!!! as its predicted to fall yet again

Sorry cidersud but you are wrong
Although supplies of fuel oil, gas oil or kerosene for a qualifying use are subject to the reduced rate, all supplies of not more than 2,300 litres of fuel oil, gas oil or kerosene are subject to the reduced rate regardless of use.

In general, we will regard a supply as comprising all deliveries to one site on one day - this will be the case even if you raise separate delivery notes or invoices. Deliveries that take place on different days, or to different sites, will usually be regarded as separate supplies - even if you issue a single invoice for more than one delivery. There will be some exceptions to this.

Here's the link to the full regulations

If you bothered to read paragraph 2.1:

The reduced rate of VAT applies to supplies of fuel and power for qualifying use (see Section 3).
The following supplies are charged at the reduced rate:
    • fuel and power for 'domestic' use (see paragraph 3.2)
    • fuel and power for charity non-business use (see paragraph 3.3)
    • fuel and power where the amount supplied does not exceed the small quantities de minimis limits (see paragraph 3.2), and
    • fuel and power partly for qualifying use and partly for other purposes, where 60 per cent or more of the supply is for qualifying use (see paragraph 3.4).
Any 'QUANTITY' supplied for domestic use is charged at 5% atm. If the delivery is for 2301litres + and is not for either a domestic dwelling or charity then the rate is increased to 20%
  • I found this re: VAT rates ...........

prices seem to have gone up a lot in a couple of weeks
guy in the village told me he paid just over 34p in mid januray
  • We have been with our supplier since we moved in 7 years ago and I am sure I shopped about at the very beginning. We once ran out of fuel on Boxing Day so we went on their top up scheme. We paid by direct debit and basically, and very naively, didn't price check again.

I've found out recently that we have been paying circa 90p per litre for standard kerosene for at least the last 3 years.

They initially credited me £300 saying it way the most they could apply.

I complained in writing asking for the costs they were charging other customers and they replied with an ex gratia cheque for £1200 but no details on rates they were charging others.

Obviously I've been stupid not looking at this sooner but I suspect this goes back more than 3 years.

Is there any way I can find out what would be a reasonable amount to be paying at any particular time?
  • Sadly I doubt you have much of a case, unless you manage to make them feel thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

You could look on the BoilerJuice web site where they have a graph. IIRC it goes back about three years.
