If alot of people are using peat, would there be a possibility of price rise

Presumably the same would be true for firewood?

i guess as gas/oil gets more expensive I guess your right the price of wood/peat would go up unless you can buy when it is cheep and store it in summer?

amtrakuk - peat cutting in the islands tends to be done on a household basis and you have to pay for your peat bank, but other than that, the only other "costs" are the hard graft of cutting, turning and lifting the peats before they are gathered and taken home for a peat stack to be built at the end of the house

Working for an oil company myself, we often get asked to do comparisons with gas usage etc. It can be hard to work out, as it depends on what size the property is, how often the heating is used, if there is any extra installation in the property etc. Please also be aware that the normal minimum delivery for home heating oil (kerosine) is 500 litres for health and safety reasons. Also prices are quoted in pence per litre without the VAT added on. Prices can also vary daily or weekly, depending on the company.

Hope this info might prove useful to someone out there.

    Hi Powie,

I read your message with interest. I live in a large bungalow and spend approx. £2000 per year on heating. I currently use oil. However I have the opportunity to switch to gas. Obviously there will be an upfront cost installing a new boiler & routing the gas from the road into the house.

Is there a formula for making cost comparison ?

Minimum Delivery is 500 litres not for health and safety reasons at all.

    Its the law

Price varies on a daily basis, unless you are a large company then possibly a weekly price would be set.
I all have learnt is from others on many sites.
    Seek legal help if unsure.
Dont pay Private Parking tickets - they are mere invoices.

  • If you need oil for heating and need to order it now, would you order twice as much as usual (if you have the storage) to beat price rises in the next 6 months, or same as usual because you think it will come down more in price?

If I were you I would certainly think hard about getting the gas connected. Talk to a plumber about installing a gas boiler, it should be very simple to connect in to your existing heating system and maybe even think about keeping your oil boiler as well so that in the future you have a choice of fuels to use, you can simply switch off the boiler you don't want to use.
Connection to the gas main in the road usually costs between £1000 and £2000 but if you have a very long drive this will affect your quote. Quotes are free so get one and see.
You really need to know the number of litres of oil you are using to do a comparison then it should be possible using the rating of your boiler (BTU's or KW) to work out a comparison with gas but there is no doubt that mains gas is far cheaper than oil or lpg even with the current price levels so if you get some quotes and let us know the figures between us we should be able to work out how quickly it will pay you back.

Just looked at the price of crude. Down to 120.85/bar. Perhaps this would be a good time to buy as I don't suspect it will last?
