I guess it depends how many independant jewellers you have locally.

We have 5, 1 of which has a few second hand items and another that always has loads of second-hand stuff including lots of diamond solitaires, some of which have stated clarity and colour.
I'm assuming it's a solitaire.....

That would give you an idea of what they would sell your ring for and therefore a probable ceiling for what they'd pay you.

Does the certificate that you have state the clarity e.g. SI1, VS2, VVS1 etc?
Does it have the colour e.g. D, E, G etc?

Is it a .5 carat stone or just under?

Is it a round stone or a different cut?

I'm not that 'up' on second-hand diamonds but diamond prices seem to increase exponentially at 'milestones' e.g. there will be a bigger price difference between a a .5 carat and a .49 carat than between a .48 & .49 carat.
Same for .98 & .99 and 1 carat.

Depending on where you bought it from, paying £2.5K for a .5 carat ring 10 years ago seems quite a high price so the diamond may be a good one.
If it is, it should be worth more than the basic scrap value.

purchase price was 1863, and on the AIG certificate it says retail replacement price 2533.

From what I have read on the internet that isn't a stunning quality diamond, just nice. In that case I would be selling on ebay having got some sort of valuation done as buyers will want to know that it has been recently valued and is real.
The extra value may come from the amount of gold used?

Looking on ebay you can get a similar ring new for 1k, so think we will just keep hold of it for a bit longer, see if prices go up.

Does anyone know how heavy a 0.51ct diamond is? just thinking about weighing the ring to work out how much it would be worth in gold, remove the diamond & keep it safe, perhaps use it in the future.

According to the website I gave you the link for, a NEW diamond of that spec would retail at anything between £900 and £1500.
As I said in an earlier post, I don't know much about the second-hand diamond market, including whether the price fluctuates like the price of gold.

When I used to have rings made in Sri Lanka my jeweller always put a lot of gold in the shank, I think a typical ring would be around 6 grams but my fingers are very slim.

I'd say that a .51 carat diamond would add very little weight to the ring so you should be able to estimate the weight of the gold.

Maybe consider using the diamond in a pendant or bracelet....
