;) sorry bout that;) no harm meant

my point was that it wont stop with dentists not doing root canals will it?

it will move on to not doing fillings etc... the rules are there for a reason, and that is to save peoples teeth, sorry but why should dentists be allowed to break the rules?

to say that we have to allow them to break the rules or we will have no nhs dentists is nothing more than blackmail by dentists.

the thing is your average nhs dentist cant be honest by saying you can have the rct privately because that is admitting to breaking the rules and so they wont do that

giving in to blackmail will not improve nhs dentistry, getting rid of the dishonest dentists will

We won't be getting rid of dishonest dentists, they will just be pushed out of the NHS.

I don't think the dentists are actually blackmailling anyone, they are trying to operate in a way that allows them to make money and serve the NHS. By preventing them from refusing to carry out certain NHS treatments, they either have to lie to patients (eg you need an extraction rather than I could do a RCT but you'd have to pay) or to go private. The net effect will be less NHS dentists.

It's my opinion (And therefore a fact!!:D) that we'll only get a decent NHS system once this abortion of a contract is finally dead and buried.

As it is,the politicians can say 'we have a full and comprehensive NHS dental service' and blame the 'dishonest' dentists for not doing what they've signed up to do.

I would be quite happy in a system where I could do check-ups, clean ups, simple fillings extractions and dentures on the NHS, for a fee that meant I could do them well and educate patients in how to avoid them. If people want something outside this, then they can pay for them.

That way, EVERYBODY would get something from the NHS, and they could take out insurance/payment policies for everything else. If they can't afford that, fine, they'll still get good basic dentistry and be taught how to keep their own teeth healthy.

    Job done.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Question for the dentists here - how much time should I allow before I know a root canal has been succesful?

I need to book in for a crown but dont want the thing to flare up with an ulcer and waste £360 on a crown on a bum tooth.

    Any ideas?

Wouldn't your own dentist be best placed to advise you on that?

About 15 years usually means it's pretty successful. But to last that long it will need a crown. You need to be guided by the dentist who did it and can see it - not by t'interweb.

Sounds good, use the NHS dentist for the easy stuff and the Hungarians for the rest.

Bf109 - I think my chap said a couple of weeks - your dentist will take another x ray anyway to check the infection has disappeared. You can ask him when you go back. Good luck :)
