1and1 versus 123.reg?

  • Have always used 123 for domain registration and 1and1 for hosting. If you know what you're doing both are just great. If you ever need support both are a nightmare.

But my question mainly relates to privacy on registration and beyond. My main priority, and reason for opening this thread, is more about finding a domain provider who will respect privacy when registering for top level domains as an individual (not a business). It seems crazy to me that if you live in the UK and want a .com or .org, you have to be willing to sacrifice your privacy, whereas if you buy a .co.uk, you are protected.

I think justhost have an extra (payable) to set up their .com as private. I don't use them as a rule for registering domains, but did get one included in the hosting package I use. ISTR an option to pay extra for privacy on the .com.

Hi Demi, What's crazy is that many companies don't offer this level of privacy and makes me wonder if they simply cannot be bothered to do the little bit of manual work. At CityCM, we go that extra mile and guarantee domain privacy with any domain at the customers request. I have PM'd you with a domain to lookup to show you we can do this.

Hi Gaz, it sounded good, but when I do a look up on that domain - citycm - I can see ALL your details - phone number, address, full name, the lot. I will PM you so that you can see just how much information is revealed. You might be surprised. Then again, for businesses, it's a requirement by law.

As I mentioned previously Namecheap offer a free WHOIS privacy protection for the first year when you buy a .com or .org through them (around $9 a year, the coupon for Oct is GETITCHEAPER I think).

I have used them for years and my domains never show my address online through the registers. The only thing you have to remember if you have loads of domains is the second year of WHOIS privacy protection is not free so you have to remember to buy (for a couple of dollars) and activate it. You get emails reminding you but it is easily overlooked.

They offer hosting but best to keep it separate and just change the nameservers over to your hosting.

BTW, I live in the UK.

If you do use 1and1, get cashback through Quidco - some of it is very good.

Sorry Demi, my mistake, try again now. I had done the privacy protection on our .net instead of .com domain.
  • I use fast hosts, domain name privacy standard on .co.uk, paid a bit more for.com

I have 4 domain with them now.

Why do you want a .com domain name? Surely .co.uk is better (and cheaper)
