We offer Domain Name privacy on our domains at CityCM at no extra cost.0

I've used both and would recommend neither - I'm currently using namecheap.com - they seem to be fine and the prices are good, it's too early to recommend them yet though.
123reg sting you with leaving fees btw - £10 a domain. Can be pricey if you move in bulk!

123reg and namecheap for domain purchase would be my recommendations - definitely keep domain registration and hosting separate. Namecheap offer the first year of domain privacy (for com domains) free and are quick and easy to use.
For hosting I used 1and1 years ago and found the service to be very poor. For example, they would take 3 days to get back to me with a query if a site was down. Compare that to my current hosting who usually take the time it takes to make a cup of tea to get back to me. Also at the time they were providing domains AND hosting for me (bad idea). I tried to stop a domain from renewing - phoned them, emailed them and also went through their internal messaging system several days before it was due to renew - they still renewed it automatically and refused to refund the money. Wouldn't touch them again personally.
My hosting is on a US based server now (even for my UK sites) so probably not useful to you.0 -
I have used 1and1 via a client, not overly impressed with their support. 123.reg bought out my old domain host, have had no issues with 4 sites now hosted with them. Their support is slow but good, we had issues with SSL and it all got resolved but could have been faster. If you want cheap there is hostpost.co.uk, support is good hosting is ok. NamesCo is ok, service is relaible but two different sites I have worked on for different clients got hacked (also read about similar problems with other ppl using their hosting), but they have improved their FTP security recently and nothing similar has happened since.Beer meter E[.\.......]F0

What a lot of different suggestions. Thank you folks! However, for those who believe I'm looking just for the cheapest and best service, that's not entirely correct. I came here initially to find out if anyone knows of any providers who are committed to privacy - ie. allowing domain names to be registered under a private address rather than exposing all our private information to the world.0

if you are business trading in the uk with a .co.uk domain name you should disclose your address. If the site is personal you can opt out of the whois database. Check the nominet website for details, I think you can use a PO box to register a domain in the uk.
It can be useful having your address available if you are trading via your site, customers place more trust in sites that have nothing to hide.Beer meter E[.\.......]F0 -

I agree, Fuzzball. And it's always useful to have a business address on sites that are trading, since who would want to trade with a business on the internet if they had no contact details? However, I am wanting to register a couple of sites as an individual and wanted to use a TLD like .com. It seems that rules in the UK say that you must disclose all your private information, -even if an individual - should you want a top level domain. It seems pretty unfair, and a violation of privacy.0

I've got a dot com and dot co uk and neither have my details on0

I've seen my clients register a domain with 123reg it takes weeks to show up on web so I wouldn't vote for them.
Daily.co.uk is good0
