When I split tickets, I normally try a significant station along the route or a station where two franchises might meet.

For instance: Bath to Birmingham is £52 for a month return, but splitting at Cheltenham Spa and it's about £42.

Anyway, the biggest thing to remember is the train MUST STOP at the station where you are splitting. You don't get off, you don't change seats (unless your reservation changed if you have one I suppose) but it must stop.

Unless you are trying to cheat by not having a ticket for part of the journey - then yes.

Not sure what you mean by 'stagger the stations' - but the split could be different on the return journey. Eg Durham York Birmingham outward and Birmingham Doncaster Durham return if buying single tickets. And make sure you fulfil the ticket T&C throughout
  • Not trying to cheat , just tryin to find out a bit of info on using trains . Thanks for the replies .

You are too early to book - come back in a week or two

Advance tickets on Virgin will be the optimum solution

London Midland are usually cheaper but it's a stopping service and takeas a lot longer

And there's megatrain - but they don't usually release rail tickets until about 6 weeks before travel and (depending on route) don't always run at weekends

Sorry - not trying to suggest you were but I didn't (and still don't) understand what you meant by staggering
  • i.e. Durham to The Hawthorns , journey stops at darlington / york / doncaster / heffield / derby/ new street . Is it better to buy a ticket from station to station or "stagger" the journey by buying Every other station or every other 2nd sttion . i.e. durham to york then york to derby , then derby to new street .????? wish i'd never asked now .

    There is no right answer.
Could be a mixture of both, could be that none will produce a cheaper journey.
The only way to find out is to try every possible combination.
    Very time consuming.

I can't say is "Yes it is cheaper" or "No it isn't" because it depends on the circumstances. As the circumstances are not supplied in the question, I cannot say, other than to say it might be under certain circumstances.
