When I split tickets, I normally try a significant station along the route or a station where two franchises might meet.

For instance: Bath to Birmingham is £52 for a month return, but splitting at Cheltenham Spa and it's about £42.

Anyway, the biggest thing to remember is the train MUST STOP at the station where you are splitting. You don't get off, you don't change seats (unless your reservation changed if you have one I suppose) but it must stop.
Not quite sure where to post this but here goes. I regularly travel from Rugby to Lincoln, off peak on a senior railcard, but often have no chance to book in advance and am frequently without internet access so have to buy tickets at the station. If anyone is in the same boat, it is cheaper to buy separate journeys, Rugby to Leicester and Leicester to Lincoln, £8.40 for Rugby to Leicester and £8.85 Leicester to Lincoln instead of £23.45 for Rugby to Lincoln. If anybody knows a cheaper way of making this journey I would be very grateful to hear of it.

Ok, have not used the train for years, but am planning trip from Sunderland to Liverpool to see friends on Feb 12 coming home Feb 13 for 1 adult and 1 child. Any ideas, i've tried a few sites but still coming out very expensive.

TPE Sale Advance tickets Liverpool <> Newcastle http://www.tpexpress.co.uk/campaigns/get-25-off-in-our-january-sale/ (then cheap singles Newcastle <> Sunderland which are inter-available between Northern Rail and the Metro).

    or

TPE Sale Advance tickets Liverpool <> York then Grand Central Anytime Returns York <> Sunderland (if the times suits; only 3 trains per day)

York <> Sunderland Anytime Return for 1 adult + 1 child is £25.50 (£14.45 if you hold a Family & Friends Railcard). Valid any train, return within 1 month.

Advance fares are only valid on the booked train and the price varies as they are quota controlled.

No need to split, direct Advance singles on those dates work out at £55.10 from the East Coast Website including a 10% web discount.
    23rd Feb 14:30 Edinburgh to London £17.95
    24th Feb 12:00 London to Edinburgh £37.15

But if you want to split tickets then try Manchester Piccadilly or York as well.

Hi all, just lost a long post so here goes again, am wanting to travel from leeds to bristol on fri 25th May and return on sun 27th, I know the trains and coaches are not out yet but was hoping for some advice as what to do first when they do. Prices for a couple of weeks before are so high, flying is out due to price.
I am not familiar with the route so am not sure where to start with split ticketing so all advice would be welcome. Megabus prices are around £42 a couple of weeks earlier with a 5 hour 55 minute journey time and awful times.
    Thanks in advance

Prices for a couple of weeks before will be sky high - they are still not cheap advance fares which are only out until the beginning of May and then not on all routes.

When they do come out, check first of all for advance singles for the complete journey - they might still be high as Cross Country are not renowned for cheap fares.

Splitting points - any or all of Sheffield, Derby. Birmingham and Cheltenham.

The other possibility (which will only be a little slower) is to travel via London and split there. Leeds - London and London - Bristol often have bargain fares.

    Hello everyone,

Is there any chance someone may know of a cheaper way to get from Birmingham/Burton/Derby (preferably Burton) to Edinburgh with splitting open return tickets? I'm looking at going from a Friday - returnd Sunday - with a 16-25 railcard.

    Appreciate any help.

    Cheers.

    Hi all,

I'm trying to get me and my partner from Birmingham (any station) to Peterborough on 7th April (returning 8th) and 21st April (returning 22nd) but so far the cheapest I've come out with is 55.10 for a return for both of us (or 45-something for 2 singles). I have a railcard 16-25 and a NUS card as well.

I've tried split ticketing, but that only seems to make the journey more expensive. I've tried MegaBus and MegaTrain too, but they don't go anywhere near P'boro. Tried coaches and they're more expensive.

Can anyone find us anything cheaper? I don't want to have to shell out £100+ for a few friends birthday celebrations (I'd like to have at least one drink whilst I'm there).
  • Check Chiltern railways website. If you dont mind the longer trip to london you can get both of you to London one way for £8.30. Returning is going to cost around £24.

East coast are then doing tickets from £11 going to Peterborough and around £16 back for the pair of you.. thats roughly the price you have found above which I would go with if i were you
