You are too early to book - come back in a week or two

Advance tickets on Virgin will be the optimum solution

London Midland are usually cheaper but it's a stopping service and takeas a lot longer

And there's megatrain - but they don't usually release rail tickets until about 6 weeks before travel and (depending on route) don't always run at weekends

Hi i have had a look on virgin trains and they are saying £148.40 for a return

Yes - that's because it is TOO EARLY to get a cheap fare. You need to wait until they are released and then book.

Looking at a similar journey in March, singles are £12 each on many trains - so £48 total for both of you.

Currently tickets are released until 5 April so it could be a week or two yet

    Or on the Virgin site, the 'Find out when to buy advance fares' link on the middle left of the page here;

(Currently showing that advance fares are available up to 5th April)

You havent said which days but look on here http://www.southernrailway.com/ as they will give you an extra 10% discount by booking through them.

if you use tesco clubcard points you could use red spotted hanky asd they give you double/treble your points towards your fare but you are cutting it fine for very cheap advance tickets.

also try splitting the journey up in london but bare in mind you will have to pay a cross london transfer of £4 per adult on top of that price.

Hi Daisyduke, did you see the replies you got when you asked this question last week?

  • Hi
    Check out London Midland trains.
Prior to the increase in fares on Jan 1st 2012, a walk on fare for London Midland (i.e. you could buy at Lime Street) was £25.50! You have to change onto the connecting train at Stafford, but its not a problem and only takes just over an hour longer even with the change. With the big saving in cost I think this would be worth it.
I know this was correct at begining of December as my friend did the journey, so even if it has gone up, it still wont be the same as a Virgin ticket.

Also for other travellers with London Midland, at the moment, until the 22nd January if you 'like' them on facebook (via London Midlands Website) you can get 25% discount on fares. This is only available via the link that they show you when you like them, however you may want to try it. I have posted the info from the FB page, but MSE won't allow me to post the link, however I have written it out, and you may be able to copy and paste.

    Taken from the FB page
I have added it hear to see if it works from here.
Don't forget - you've got an extra week to grab a bargain!

Enjoy 25% off thousands of London Midland Advance and Return fares until 22 January when you buy online.

We've tried to make the offer as straightforward as possible, so there's no discount code to worry about. Simply click the following link to go to our secret online shop - the discounted fares will automatically show when you plan your journey

You need to use http:// before the info above, but as I said MSE wont allow me to post lonks yet.

The cheapest way (if you are travelling in peak times) is almost invariably a season ticket. Weekly, monthly or annual.

It can be cheaper to just get the season ticket to the London terminal and use PAYG Oyster for the final leg - from Lpool St to Angel on the 205 bus for example
