Insure the Box

This year my car insurance renewal has doubled!

Last years figure of approx £750 has been increased to just shy of £1500. When I rang Sheilas' Wheels to find out why I was basically told that as far as they were concerned my address was unninsurable, and had i been a new customer they wouldn't have been able to offer me insurance at all.

Being a Registered Childminder really restricts my options but through searching all the comparison sites I have managed to find a few policies on the right side of a thousand pounds.

One insurance company has weighed in far cheaper than all the others though. INSURE THE BOX (found on Moneysupermarket) wants to fit a telematics box in my car that will track the mileage. I'm covered up to 6000 miles and if i go over (which I wont) I can buy extra credits. The extra bonus is that its a tracking device if my car is ever stolen.

I've never heard of them before. Is this a) a good idea and b) a reputable company. Their business address is gibralter.

  • insurethebox are pretty good. They are authorised by the Financial Services Authority and their polcies are backed by Catlin, one of the UK's better insurers with an A (excellent) security rating.

  • Hi I am a noob here.

Does anyone use Insure the box and have bad credit?

Seems they do a credit search.

I have a couple of CCJs and some defaults I am paying through a debt management company.
They are the cheapest quote I have gotten as a new driver.
    Thanks,
    Kree

My 17 year old little brother is looking at £1800 for a 1.1
    corsa
from insure the box. Same issue the address is
    uninsurable
, elephant are closer to the £3000 mark. Anyone got any other ideas, its really
    disappointing
paying for all those lessons to be faced with this barrier. I now understand why so many people drive uninsured.

    Take the £1800 quote...it's a bargain for a 17 year old male.

Like you, I had doubts about Insure the Box, but after posting here and hearing from folk like sally baylis, took the plunge and insured one of our family cars with my 18 year old daughter as a named driver. They were easily the cheapest. I cannot speak for their claims service - and hope I never have to - but their Customer Service is very good with calls answered quickly and in a friendly manner. Also the telematics box was fitted without fuss and is not intrusive. The fitter (who was an independent contractor) told me that he was kept busy fitting these boxes in my area so Insure the Box must be quite a popular choice. At the end of the day, you must decide, but so far, I have no regrets about insuring with them.

Cynical me, Some people are a bit biased. Especially those that get paid by the company in question.

Who are you referring to in particular?
  • I was curious to see if this would be a cheaper option for me, i'm over 30 have been driving since 17 and have no claims discount for every year I have driven, I pay about 300 for my Xsara coup! with swift cover for 8,000 miles PA. Quote from insure the box came back as over £638, seems i'm not getting such a good deal and makes me wonder why, as I have a clean licence and all those years no claims discount, saying that I laughed at my current insurance company as I have recently moved to a rural area where my house insurance dropped through the floor as the crime rate is none existent yet my car insurance went up even though I reduced the miles I would be doing per year!

Probably because statistically more serious accidents occur driving on rural roads - narrow, winding, no lighting etc.

    Hi everyone,

Just a quick question. How is everyone’s dealing going on with their insurer (insurethebox). Any negative comments.

    thanks
