bnkers77 I hope you managed to allocate the tickets. However, in my opinion you did not miss much! My husband and I have just been to see The American at the Empire Leicester Square and we are glad it was a freebie. Had we paid a ticket we would have been disappointed.
The film is slow, cannot make up its mind whether it is a thriller or an art-house film, it is improbable and predictable, with very stereotypical characters (I am Italian and know the sort of people and places portrayed in the film - not at all like they are in reality!), there are a couple of "time-fillers" sex scenes that go on and on unnecessarily, there is a lot of George Clooney in various states of un-dress. Unless you are a total G Clooney fan, I don't think it was a great film at all. Also, depressing!
However, it was free so we were thankful for the opportunity to have watched it. It made a difference from pottering around at home on a grey Sunday morning. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -

Sorry, must be my naughty sense of humour0 -
Caterina, thanks for the update. It sounds like I saved myself a trip for something that sounds a little too pretentious for it's own good! I didn't know about the sex scenes, I AM a Clooney fan & wouldn't complain about seeing him in various states of undress admittedly but only if it added anything to the film overall. I hate stereotypical characters and things that are 'arty' just for the sake of it. Total Film's review seems to echo your thoughts in these respects:
'...The American uses fleeting bursts of action as torpor-breaking punctuation.' (which I assume include the naughty scenes) '...Meanwhile, Joffe's ponderous dialogue defeats Corbijin's European cast and the pay-off is downright tittersome'.
It also says the dramatic climax 'takes an abrupt nose-dive into laughable pretentiousness'. Oh well, not one of George's best then but I'm sure die-hard GC fans loved it all the same.I hope I didn't brain my damage...

There's nothing "arty" about The American, and I wouldn't be to quick to judge it on the basis of someone else's opinion. I thought it was an excellent film, well acted and beautifully filmed. It's slow and stripped-back, but that's the empty life of an assassin! The final outcome is a tad predictable, but I still think it's a film worth seeing, specially if you are sick of the Hollywood blockbuster crap.0

I've got tickets for Narnia but i'm worried about the AE card,i'm thinking maybe i shouldn't go as i haven't got one and that would be embarrassing, getting turned away.0

They turned away about 6 or 7 people at the last AMEX screening I went to, so I wouldn't risk it if you don't have a card...0
