For those who saw the film, 'Coriolanus' yesterday, did you get it? Man, it was mind numbing. For those who are Shakespearean followers might like this film. I thought I was listening to a foreign film at most times. Nearly half of the people at the cinema were walking out. Not for me I'm afraid. Apart from that the film was well produced with good cinematography. I should have gone to see 'The Artist' again as I saw it on the 13th December and I loved it. Oh well at least I saw The Artist.
I got it but it was a difficult one. It's a long time since I saw anything Shakespearian and it does help if you understand the rhythm of Shakespeare. As such it took me ages to get into the swing of things and felt quite stupid last night lol
It isn't one that I studied and I know I nodded off a couple of times because I lost interest. I might see it again, if I get the opportunity.
To me it felt more suited to a TV movie rather than a big screen film.
However, I do know some who absolutely loved it.0 -
I felt it was a lacklustre adaptation and rather stagey (yes,I know it's a play...) - it just didn't work for me. I've not read the play, but will do and may feel differently when I have done so.
However, I've seen a good number of Shakespeare films and plays update/change the setting etc and have done so successfully, often when they've change some of language and references. I felt they had given it a modern setting (which reminded me of the Bosnia/Kosovo war) but which jarred with the some of the language and references.
Nonetheless, there were some very good performances, Vanessa Redgrave and Brian Cox to name but two.Free thinker.:cool:0 -
I thought Coriolanus was brilliant personally.
War Horse, on the other hand, was bloody awful. Got me quite angry, actually - they used every trick imaginable to get you crying, from the Hovis advert opening, to the syrupy score to the doe-eyed horse and beyond. Manipulative doesn't cover it.0 -
I almost didn't go to Coriolanus after having properly found out what it was about (had not even heard of the play before). Many people did leave but to my surprise I did not hate it.
It was too violent for me, nonsensical in places and on occasion I could not follow it but it did not feel too long and was interesting enough. I agree that some of the acting was very good but I cannot say that the spitting Mr Fiennes did anything for me. Was that Gerard Butler actually acting? I don't think I had seen him doing it before.0 -
The best bit about Coriolanus was watching all the chavs behind me file out when they realised it wasn't going to be the 300 Part II. (I think the trailer misrepresents the film quite badly.)
Thought it was a great adaptation/modernisation albeit one probably more suited for stage or TV. The acting from the main cast was great, appaling from the extras. Direction was pretty good for a first timer, he obviously knows the source material well.0 -
Went to see Coriolanus last night - not a play I had read before and only a sketchy idea of the plot. I'd forgotten how difficult it is to get all the nuances if you've not read the actual play beforehand which would have helped in my opinion. The make up of the audience was entirely different to the usual attendees - seemed to be quite a few students and more mature people who must have been Shakespeare buffs because there were no walk outs at the one in Glasgow.
I thought it was a good performance but agree that some of the extras were a bit dodgy.0 -
