Am I the only person who's been offered extra postage? Sent an item to someone - £1 postage, but it was just over, so cost me over £2. When the buyer received it, they offered to pay the extra postage to me, which was bizarre, but I left ot their judgement, and they paid me an extra £1. Which obv got reflected in their feedback (from me)

So, if you use this site. Thank you.

I object to that since it is depriving eBay of fees.

Curious way of thinking on a moneysaving site. Be sure eBay is thinking in exactly the opposite way about you i.e how can we use our monopoly to deprive this seller of a bigger percentage of each sale and increase our profits, hence policies like trying to force sellers to offer 'free' postage which just happens to increase ebay's fees at the expense of the sellers profits.

I can understand conflicting views between buyers and private sellers on a moneysaving site like this. I didn't think anyone would be worrying about Ebays profits.:rotfl:

I think that people are concerned that if enough people avoid ebay fees in this way then ebay will put the fee's up (again) which will of course hit the honest sellers but not those who continue to avoid fee's...LOL

Personally I look at the overall selling price ..i.e item and P&P and if it is ok then I buy - Am not really concerned abut the split.

All the tosh again about "if they are prepared to cheat ebay, they may cheat you" - it just doesn't wash. It's far more open to retribution from the buyer so jsut wouldn't happen.
Doctors are one of the target groups for tax evasion, much more serious cheating than ebay fee avoidance. You wouldn't stop going to them would you?

Money saving yes, but we do prefer to advocate staying within the rules of any site we use. Shoplifting would save you even more money , but you won't see anyone recommending it here and if they did ithe thread would be removed.

Really though if you can't abide by the rules of ebay why bother using it?

Exactly. Money-saving should be honest, not dishonest. You could also while you're at it go and advise people to save money by not paying their taxes, but I think that would be frowned upon.

EDIT - Soo put it way better than I did with her example!

I mostly buy from capped categories (DVDs and books) anyway, so it's not an issue for me as a buyer anyway. I sell things largely at cost or with inclusive postage. If you are so concerned about buyers looking at the total, sell inclusive postage, that way there's no issue over what they are paying. If you are so concerned about eBay fees, they have a monopoly in the auction business for a reason (more fees = more cash = more advertising = more buyers), and most of the other sites worth selling on give you no option to avoid fees.

I use Ebay (occasionally) because they are a monopoly and there is no viable competition to sell with. If there were viable competition they would not be able to get away with half the stuff they do. But even if none of that were true consumers can still use companies and disagree with how they do business or aspects of what they do. There is unequal bargaining power between a consumer and a large company.

And this site is very much about not just accepting the 'rules' which companies try to force on us but challenging them and finding loopholes and workarounds or breaking their 'rules' to get the best possible deal for the consumer - not to worry about the profits of these companies or what 'rules' they try to impose on us to maximise their profits and cost us money. Martin himself does this all the time. Just take this sites' campaign against the banks. Rather than accept their 'rules' this site has played a part in challenging their rules on things like overdraft charges and card repayment protection insurance - rules that are costing us money. 'Why bother using them if you do not agree to follow all their rules?' is a childish thing to say and completely against the spirit and purpose of this site.

And your attempt to conflate following ebay's proft maximising (for them) 'rules' and criminal law regarding something like shoplifting is equally childish and ridiculous. Challenging or breaking the 'rules' or finding a workaround or a loophole to Ebay's or the Bank's or any other company's 'rules' is wholly different from breaking criminal law and is very much what this site is about.

Equally, the argument that if this site encourages a moneysaver to use a workaround or a loophole or bend the 'rules' or break the 'rules' to save money then this costs companies profits and hence further down the line other consumers have to pay more is entirely at odds with this site. Martin has never proposed this argument and this site would simply fold if he believed that. They will charge other consumers as much as they can get away with to maximise their profits.

Remember Ebay is a ruthless monopoly with gross profits of billions of dollars per year which has cynically and utterly selfishly changed it's rules over the years to maximise it's profits and extract more money from consumers like me who use that site. This section of the site is about consumers getting the best deal out of Ebay not Ebay fanboyism. To quote Martin, 'It's about screwing big companies before they screw you'. To paraphrase, 'It's about screwing Ebay before they screw you'.:money:

Martin encouraged people to take on the banks legally (and actually they lost!) so your argument about being OK to cheat ebay is not relevant.

As for ebay being a monopoly, oh please, such an old argument it is not worth discussing anymore. When there were real competitors , proper ones with big names no one bothered to use them so they gave up. I actually have issues with a high street shop, instead of pushing up their profits by using them and trying to cheat them i shop elsewhere, I would rather pay extra elsewhere, or go without than use that shop. So, I say again if you don't like ebay and their rules why aren't you out on another thread extolling the virtues of a rival site, or are you like a lot of people, you pretend not to like ebay rules but recognise that those very rules are regs are what keep ebay running. So you moan about them and tell everyone to risk their accounts by not following terms and conditions, whilst boosting their profit yourself.

I have issues with some things ebay do, read some of my recent threads. Does that make them evil, no, does that give me the right to cheat them, no. I accept the things that annoy me and work with them.

Since ebay is not a charity and has never pretended to be one, why are people so surprised when they try to make a profit? Gosh, what next..am I supposed to believe that Marks and Spencer tempt me with overpriced food just to make themselves look good or do I accept they want to make a profit.
