They can stop quicker and throw a sheep in the boot.
  • I took the Bridgestone's off my Astra VXR. The wear was ridiculous and the grip was shocking.

Replaced them with Continental tyres which seem much better.

My Honda came with Bridgestone Potenzas and I didn't care for the high wear rate. What I hadn't realised was also how noisy they were. I learned that when I switched them for Dunlop SP01s, which seemed to halve cabin noise levels.

Eventually, like a couple of earlier posters, I've settled for Toyos on both my cars (one FWD, one RWD - both handle well on them). From my experience, Toyo seems to offer big brand quality
without the premium the big brands charge.

I don't feel confident buying Chinese-made tyres, nor do I want the hand-me-down tread patterns passed by the big brands to their second tier factories in low wage regions.

So far, all the Toyos I've had have been made in Japan - with all that implies about manufacturing quality. I just hope they keep it that way!

Police use Goodyear Eagles. Don't know if you considered this brand?

Every Police force and Ambulance service that i know of used to use GoodYears, but over the last few years they have slowly started to drift over to Michelin. In London it was some of the Traffic cars that started to use the Michelins, then some of the Merc Sprinters, mainly due to excessive wear on the shoulders when using the Goodyear tyres.

The LAS went over to Michelin about 18 months ago, no more shoulder wear on the Sprinters, and more predictable handling and wet weather grip with the Primacy's, though a few cars, mainly old shape Zafiras had the Energy tyres fitted.

The Goodyear Eagle NCT tyre is OK, but I have used them for years on Astra response cars and old shape Zafiras and new shape Zafiras response cars, they aren't as good as a Michelin Primacy, about on par with a Michelin Energy.

^^ They also get a massive bulk discount which your average Joe would not see in his lifetime :/
Wouldn't surprise me in fact if they were supplied FOC.

I have used all kinds of tyres on various vehicles over the past thirty years, and for the last ten years have used Pirelli P6000s, not flash, but good grip in all conditions and they wear well.

If you buy anything in large volumes then it is sensible to negotiate a discount, but no the Ambulance service don't get them free, but do have contracts with the suppliers to only supply the approved tyre, previously GoodYear now Michelin in London.

As far as P6000's go I had them on my Mondeo when I first got it, good wear but in the wet they were rubbish, I would never have them on a car ever again, in fact if I bought another car and it had P6000's on it I would change them straight away.
