I think it may have something to do with Hognaston Church tympanum!and the 'Creatures' there
?
Or a report from last november about an unidentified 'Cat like' creature photographed at HOGNASTON? That was a Hoax?
Interesting read with many poss clues on Hognaston?0 -
Hi, I've just joined up to this but could the Pete not be a Dragon as in the Disney film "Pete's Dragon" ?
:beer:I love this place :j:T:j0 -
If Hognaston is right and the pain referred to is the French word for bread, and the creature is a horse, I think they call them packhorses, so maybe it needs the pack infront to work? On wikipedia it says "A packhorse or pack horse refers generally to an equid such as a horse, mule, donkey or pony" so it could be any of those words we're looking for too I guess!0

I did read about Packhorses when following one of the earlier clues and I googled Packhorse Inns and also !!!! Horse Inns. There was a !!!! Horse Inn, (ooh MSE thinks I wrote a rude word!) whose address was 39 The Street, Detling
http://www.cockhorseinn.madasafish.com/
But I could not find anything that made me think that this particular "The Street" could tie in with "the pete"
If pain in the couplet is the french word for bread, then it would be pronounced pan and therefore the rhyming couplet would not rhyme. Don't know if this would matter.0 -
Going back to 'pain' being French for bread, there is a place called Breadsall near to Carsington Water. Also, I was wondering if the 'fine way to travel' was refering to a speeding fine rather than a pleasant mode of transport. There is/was a campaign in Breadsall to lower the speed limit around the village primary school. Not sure if any of this is relevant, but thought I'd mention it.0

the puzzling thing is that it does not have a capital P, which might mean that it is not in fact a name.
That thought did cross my mind too, but with the hrh not being in capitals and that meaning the Queen (I think it's usually in capitals?) I'm not sure that we can read anything into it?Going back to 'pain' being French for bread, there is a place called Breadsall near to Carsington Water. It's a good idea, but unfortunately (in reality) Breadsall is really far away from Carsington so I'd be very very surprised if it was that as I think it's just a bit too obscure to be expected to get to there from the Carsington clue0 -
well in stuck, any ideas to go on.0

I've went back to the start to see if I can find any other possible great sources of pain but I'm still not finding anything that fully clicks. I ended up on the 'plague village' of Eyam, my gut feeling is that it's too far from Carsington, but it fits a source of pain and the fleas carrying the infection travelled in a package of cloth which might fit a fine way to travel and creature. Not got anywehre with flea either and now I feel itchy
Also looked at the steeple grange light railway which runs through killers dale and has an engine called greenbat but nothing from that either.
I'm clutching at straws and feel like I'm missing something obvious0 -

It's really funny you should mention Eyam, because I couldn't get that one out of my head either due to the plague link, but like you, gut feeling was it was a bit too tenuous a link and too far away!In previous hunts the clues seemed to be quite well linked together, so I think it should be something more obvious.
The only other things I could think of is that Carsington Water is also known as Carsington Reservoir and maybe Reservoir is the link word? Or is there someone famous called something Carsington? The only Carsington's I could find were characters in books by a lady from America called Loretta Chase, ironically though, one of the Carsington's (Alistair) travelled to Derbyshire in one of the books (the book is called Miss Wonderful) but I'm not sure if it means anything!!0
