Being historically a big farming area, there are many many connections between peterborough, pigs and packhorses
The anagram is a no-no here too
I cant find or think of anything else that Pete could mean other than being a shorthand for Polyethylene terephthalate(Spot the cut n paste)

I am at Topley Pike (creature) nearby is Pig Tor. about a mile away I found Treak Cliff Cavern which fits letters but not clues. Tried the old wood as Teak (Treak) but clutching at straws now.
Dont think I'm helping much but thought I'd share anyway0 -
Hi cistolic,
Sorry if I am being obtuse, but please can you explain in words of one syllable how you got to Topley Pike?0 -
I searched the Buxton Youlgreave (source of pain) area for references to Pete and somehow I found it?
Then saw meeting place as assembly room found reference to that in same area and somehow I found it?
Please dont trust my answers. Just thought one piece of my input might give someone else an idea0 -
Hi all. I'm useless at this sort of thing but noticd someone said they couldn't think oof a rhyme with a hog in it and I thought of this one:
It's a Mother Goose nursery rhyme:
To market, to market, to buy a fat pig, Home again, home again, jiggety-jig.
To market, to market, to buy a fat hog, Home again, home again, jiggety-jog.
To market, to market, to buy a plum bun, Home again, home again, market is doneNot sure if it fits at all but thought it worth a punt if anyone can tie it in to the clues and what you have so farIf at first you don't succeed try, try, try again.

I did wonder if the last line saying 'old wood' meant that maybe the six letter word we're looking for is forest?
I keep looking at the rest of the clue because it might be possible to link it backwards.
The only thing I can thing of for the "cr and p" bit is maybe elements? cr is Chromium and p is Phosphorus, doesn't make a lot of sense, but i've tried anagrams (this anagram solver is pretty good here) and I'm not getting anything else from it as of yet!0 -

There's a Roman road called Ermine Street (Check Wikipedia, the link was really obvious even with the spoiler tags when I posted it, so I removed it incase people didn't want to see it) that goes through Peterborough, and an ermine is a stoat, so would fit the creature part? At the moment I've got no idea how any of that would fit in with the rest of it, but will keep looking
Bit random but just looking back to my first post on the thread (I've taken the spoiler tags off the quote) if I was on the right track then maybe the rhyme is 'Pop goes the weasel' because stoats and weasels are part of the same family (I think)?0 -
Since 'the pete' is making no sense, I wonder if once you get 'the creature' you have to put it 'in' 'the pete' to make an anagram. I've tried with horsethepete (which contains street) and hogthepete and got nothing. I think I'm going mad already!
pizza's on it's way, think I'll need to make a fresh go of it in the morning0 -

That's a good point, I wonder where the 'a street' bit would fit, I wonder if 'the pete' could be a nickname for something, like a pub or an organisation? and maybe street is someones surname?
Edit: Just re-read, I see what you did there, it contains street jumbled up! Think I need a break from this! :rotfl:0 -
Enjoy yr Pizza!
I feel like Ive walked the limestone way 3 times today
I really like the Hognaston theory, french bread etc, but the fine way to travel is greatly unsettling
Im starting to wonder: We're looking at animals such as Horse, pig ,Ermine,Stoat ,pike etc,yet I worry why the word in the clue is 'Creature' and not 'Animal'. Creature makes me think more of Insects, bugs etc? Maybe a mythological creature associated with the area?
General recurring misty thoughts:D :
Pig-Iron using limestone,limestone way,Ermine,Stoats,pig tor,Anagrams,3rd couplet being a building/house/pub/church/etc.
Fish pie for tea,yum(Falls Over)
