I no doubt our Scottish neighbours put up with a lot more than us in the north but to them its natural.

I remember watching the Joanna Lumley programme a couple of years ago where she went to see the Northern Lights. She got off really far north (somewhere in the Arctic Circle) and said it was so cold it was like breathing in knives. Then it showed local children running around in t-shirts! They would probably feel quite hot in one of our winters.

How are people managing to maintain 20C+ in their houses overnight? I take it these must be new builds? My living room dropped to below 16C overnight,. I currently have the aircon on to bring it up to 18C

it's all about insulation really losing heat, my house is over insulated to the extreme of condensation (we're getting vented roof tiles to fix this soon) but it means it holds heat really well and i couldn't put my heat on at night or i'd be too hot to sleep, my house is far from a new build i think it's pushing 30 years

mines off but it is nippy today i havnet taken my coat off since i came back from the school run, i'll prob put it on when we come back after lunch

  • No heating on here either although mornings are getting chilly in house I have noticed. house is warm enough in evenings. I stay sensible like a lot of you and have on appropriate clothing (slippers, jumper etc).
  • My Welsh house is still absolutely fine without heating... in fact when the sun comes out I have to retreat into the basement because it gets overheated upstairs!

In my London house you can feel the difference now, but for me that just means I no longer have to use the cooling fan. I do have a bit of a cheat because there's a waterbed there, which is permanently kept on at the correct temperature, so it's warm and cosy as soon as you climb in :)

Mind you, it's only last week I was sleeping in the campervan with no heating whatsoever!

well, my bath did indeed warm me up, so the woodburner remains unlit.

Perception IS everything with heat. not just where you are and what you are used to, but who you are and what you do and, frankly, how well you cope with discomfort!

I have hypothyroidism, so I'm almost always ''cold'' but putting the heating on doesn't necessarily change that, certainly less than doing something impacts. However, I also find I'm not that tolerant of heat...and lots of my early childhood was spent in very hot countries where we lived at the time.

If you can't move around to keep warm things are inevitably going to be more uncomfortable for you, and that needs to be considered, espcecially if skimping on heating is a choice not a necessity. I fully expect my visitors over winter to keep their woollies on, but it does grate a little when they are doing it now, its not THAT cold yet!
  • Our house is maintaining about 20 too. We are in Wiltshire and its pretty warm here at the moment (no sun though) Its just under two years old though so pretty well insulated i would think.

We are moving in approx 5 weeks to a nearby village and the house we are buying is a 111 year old stone cottage so im dreading the difference tbh. I am going to hold off putting the heating on till we move if i can though.

It was still 23 degrees last night. But, sitting in the living room, my hands were freezing for some reason. OH's suggestion? 'Well put the heating on then.'. Rightttttt, cos the room is soooo cold, and heating it up further will obviously work! If my hands are cold at 23 degrees, the issue is NOT with the warmth of the apartment! No, the solution was simply a hot drink and putting my hands in my pockets for a while.
