Why thank you, i consider that a compliment
I'm 42 so not sure that i am quite old enough to be your granny, but your granny sounds lovely. Memories are wonderful, they don't cost anything, and they keep near to our heart all those whom we have loved and whom have loved usGrocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

We haven't had ours on at all yet, but its growing increasingly difficult to resist the temptation. We had a couple of sharp frosts earlier in the week & it was no fun at 0600 in the morning drying off after my shower I can tell you.
I've lost count of how many layers I've got on. Both of us are turning into our grandparents with vests & slippers on all the time and the sofa has lots of wool blankets for us & our dog to snuggle under.
I'd love to be able to declare in a couple of weeks that we survived without the heating until 1st December, but we may well have to admit defeat before too long as I don't think this slightly milder weather will be around for long.
Got to go now & chip another icicle off my nose x0 -

I'm getting in to the habit of entering my meter readings each Friday evening on my energy suppliers website, so it will be interesting to see tomorrow evening, how much more electric I have used with all the baking i have done today and how much it has cost me this week for both Gas and Electricity usage. I don't know why i'd never thought of doing this before, but it is really helping me to see whether or not i can afford to put the heating on for longer on cold days. I overpaid the energy Direct Debits during the months when the central heating was turned off so even though i was overpaying and out of pocket them, it has meant that i can now be a bit more relaxed about having the heating on a little longer during very cold days/evenings.Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

ours is on for an hour in the morning still. yesterday it was on all day as i scrubbed the carpet so wanted that to dry. Its been off all day today and now i am cold. Well, my neck is cold. got a blanket wrapped round me.
i read something about snow for end of next week. i really hope not! i love the snow but just not yet!! :P0 -
heating on, for 3 hours in the evening. I really feel the cold but then i have an underactive thyroid.....right now i've got two thermal vests on and two jumpers as well. If i had my duvet over me i'd be too warm, even without heating....but it means sitting still and I don't do that til bed... :-)0

i had to have my heating on last night--it wasnt particularly cold but i had my 'chilled' feeling back--i have been carrying this cold about for the past 3 weeks and it keeps rearing up!--i lost 2 stone over the summer and i must be feeling the cold more than previous years. Feel better today but i cant say 100pc!mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0

ok, well, after a night of heating on tbh the house doesn't feel THAT much warmer and I've decided I really resent that. After doing the carpets I will never leave heat on at night again!. I'm looking forward to tackling the carpet cleaning though. I sympathise with those with ailments that respond to cold, I have too (underactive thyroid and a neurological condition) and when aches and pains are forcing you to take it easy and then being sedentary then youget colder which makes the aches worse, which make you colder....and so on. If heating off is a saving rather than a necessity then IMO that's the time to look at getting enough heat to get you comfortable. Once you can break the viscous cycle it helps. If heat off is a necessity then getting the right clothing, hot water bottles, a draught free room and hunkering down is a good choice. I'd seriously consider electric blankets for both bed and a sofa in that case, so you can be warmer for low cost in more than one place.0

I'm really impressed with anyone that still has not switched on their heating. I have gas central heating with an inset gas fire in the sitting room but no other form of heating. I'd love a wood burner to top up my heating but the cost of installing one would take a long time to pay for itself. As I am planning to move house in about 2 years to be nearer to some of my children and grandchildren it doesn't seem worthwhile However, next house has to have an open fire or a woodburner alongside the central heating. Ideally I would like to be self sufficient if mains gas and electric were no longer available or I chose to do without.
I have noticed when I visit one of my sons and family, in a terraced house, just how much warmer his house is than mine without the heating on. I wonder if his neighbours help to heat his house or having attached neighbours is insulation in itself. I live in a detached (only 3 years old) and all of my sons and families think that my house is really cold. Perhaps it is the wooden floors throughout downstairs and ceramic tiles in kitchen/dining room/utility rooms that contribute to the low temps. I did manage to last until Nov 1st before I put on the heating apart from a couple of occasions when I had grandchildren to stay. I'm now well and truly switched on for an hour in the morning when I come in from work (night shift) and 2 or 3 hours in the evening before I go to work.0 -
