@Auntycaz - Our maisonettes were built c.1960, all electric, with under floor heating (living room and hall only). We moved here in 1983 - by then, the heating was clapped out to say the least and we had an electric fire in the living room. Hot water came via an immersion heater. Expensive for not a lot of heating, but we were younger and fitter then so coped OK.
About 5 years later the council put in storage heaters, two in the living room, one in each bedroom and one in the hallway, all on overnight Economy 7 but still expensive to run. Lovely and warm in the morning but, by the time we were home from work/school, not much heat left in them so we still used the electric fire. Hot water still on an immersion heater.
Finally, in 2007, we had gas installed and got central heating that we love. Yes, it's still expensive but at least we're warm and have plenty of hot water. Now the PTB are banging on about heat source pumps. Aaargh!Be kind to others and to yourself too.2 -

Wednesday. Thst,s sad about your corner shop freezer story, especially as local people without transport will probably have relied on being able to buy the contents but it just shows the problems small businesses are facing. I would have been tempted, in his shoes, to have just emptied it, switch if off and wait for better times. But perhaps he,s finding other more profitable ways of using the space? We,re reading of many supermarkets reducing their ranges. Sad times.but perhaps a reminder that we actually need very few of the thousands of lines they offer to still survive. But an affluent society does offer more choice.
Our market veg stall gave us a double portion of blueberries today for half price for being regular customers - a cheering gesture. They will go nicely with our breakfast porridge!6 -

Primrose - the man in the shop said he was going to buy a smaller upright fridge instead as he said that was cheaper to run. I was very shocked at how much he was paying. He is open long hours though until 10 pm at night so it must all add up.

@nursemolly sorry to hear you've got no heating due to hive being down. Hope it's up and running again soon. I don't really understand how hive works as I'm a bit of a tech dinosaur, but my daughter's heating can be switched on and off via a smart phone but they also have the option to control it via the wall thermostat so best of both worlds.3

Wednesday. It show how much these small businesses need our support. They,re losing out at both ends. If they stay open longer the run up higher fuel bills. i they close ewrlier to reduce energy consumption they lose passing custom. But even if they close earlier, they might save a little on lighting perhaps but still have to keep fridges and freezers running. They can't win really.and most of the owners must be worried sick ut how they,re going to survive.3

Freezing fog when I went for a walk earlier (2 t-shirts, jumper, jeans, tracksuit top, coat) and it was the first time I needed to put the tracksuit hood up - it was really bitter. Although the lounge is only 7.5 that felt warm when I came back in. Cup of tea then a few bursts of the fan heater will be required today2
