I have decided to run the heating whenever the temperature drops below 16°C. I'm worried that if I don't use the UFH system the system may react poorly to the cold and the last thing I need is for a burst pipe under the flooring.

I get your thinking but rest assured you won't get a burst pipe until the pipe freezes.
We're heading towards freezing temperatures towards the end of next week :(

Yes indeed however the thermal mass of your floor will keep it, and the pipes, way above freezing.

  • It's 11.5 oC in my bedroom. My radiators are old and frankly rubbish.
Mine is probably colder, haven't had the rads on in there for years - about 14 years in fact :)

Living room dropped below 16 today, and I have to say I felt it but as soon as the fire was lit at 4pm it soon got toasty - and is still warm enough now even though its been out a couple of hours

Dropped temperature further as we are burning through £5 of gas a day, knocked the evening temperature back to 18c from 19c between 5:30pm and 9pm, 16c overnight then 18c between 8am and 10am then back to 16c

Layers + blanket seems the answer, i feel like I'm 58 not 38!

I’m heading towards 60, and feel the cold, but only popping heat on for an hour at the moment usually about tea time , been under fur throws for most of the year!
My duvet is a feather 13.5 tog.along with brushed cotton bottom sheet. And once I’m in it is toasty. Bedrooms don’t get very warm and I don’t have heating on overnight.
living room is showing 14 at 5.30 this mo.

  • Well I finally caved and put the heating on since both kids seem to have come down with sore throats and sniffles.

So I have set the CH to come on for bursts when they are home.
Early morning 6.45 - 7.30 so everyone can wake up to a cosy house and get out the door.

Then heating is off all day as it is only me and the dogs at home and I will happily layer up and use hot water bottles etc.

Then the second burst of heat is about 6 - 6.30 for when husband is coming home since hes generally travelling alot and feels the cold.
The last burst is in the night about 1 - 1.30 just to take the chill off.

We woke up this morning to 3 degrees on our mountain top so its definitely turning.

    Time to find me again

We have ours on far less than normal but no way can Mrs Indout do with the cold.
Its on 2 hours in a morning now set at 21 - Fire if needed in living room in afternoon and early evening then central heating at 21 from around 7-10pm.
SM showing around £5-£6 a day at the moment.
Just had Elec bill this morning at £102, but for some reason it has not billed us for Gas again so I will have to do a manual reading tonight after work, expecting Gas to be around £140 for November so £240 ish for November less £66 from Gov and £160 from our DD leaves us £14 to come off our credit of £786. we will be using more Gas as it gets colder but should be fine for this winter.
