I live in the coldest part of Scotland and my heating is never off, the thermostat deals with it but it was so cold this morning that the heating came on.  The temps are set at 10 degrees for nights and 18 for day.

We can usually hold off until October, sometimes November. Boiler is on hot water only at this point.

Most DIY problems can be solved by a combination of spanner, pliers, screwdriver, Allan key and a blade. (Hold it, twist it, cut it!) Very occasionally industrial language, a hammer and an adhesive may need to be added to the mix. (Curse it, hit it, patch it!)

My combi is on hot water only mode too.
I have my thermostat set for 3 temps a day. 0600-1800 is 14degrees, 1800-2130 is 18 degrees, 2130-0600 is 10 degrees. Last year I just left it to come by the thermostat if it needed to, this year I’ve actively turned it to just heat the water.

It’s funny. I’ve always said 20 ish with cloudy sunshine was perfect weather for me. But it doesn’t feel overly warm after that wild heat we had (top temp recorded not far from me). It’s 23 here now, and I’m sat in my garden in the sun wearing a light jumper and jeans! You soon acclimatise don’t you?
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.

That is my idea of hell. Although I feel the cold in the winter, my home is like a sun trap in the summer and it has felt joyously summery since April, even in the evenings. My dual fuel bill was £41 last month and that is about as low as its every going to get now.

The lawn is brown but then so is everyone else's. It will recover.

I know, we now go away over the winter to sunnier climes as we do love the sun.
  • After the hot weather, I have noticed that I can find 20 degrees chilly. In winter my house isn't heated to that temperature as expensive. I can't get used to 28 degrees plus. No looking forward to later this week.

It's off but it's been chilly here in West Yorkshire in the evenings and, believe it or not, we're still occasionally using throws over our knees!  Unlike Rosa_Damascena, our West-facing living room is like a fridge until the sun gets round late afternoon.  On the other hand, the South-facing kitchen is like an oven so any kitchen jobs need to be done early morning.

Last month's duel fuel bill was £41.73.  Very little gas or electric used as £16-odd of that was for standing charges and VAT.  August will likely be around the same and so would September - if it weren't for the fact our fixed deal finishes at the end of August.   :'(  We have a new 12-month fixed deal, no exit fees, but our current £80 pm DD will be £250 pm - and we're low users.  Ouch.  Still, that's going to be cheaper than the new SVR come October.  Needless to say, we'll be watching our consumption even more closely than we already do.

It feels like Nero fiddles whilst Rome burns. People at the top care about advancing their own positions and think nothing of the 50% of us about to be plunged into fuel poverty. That is not public service.

I think what is often overlooked amongst the media hysteria is we live in a mild, maritime climate - bathed by the gulf stream and with generally warmer westerly winds.

The hysteria amongst the press about heating costs is not helpful, there is little reason to have the heating on until well into November and then for limited times to take the "chill" off. The only exception to this is when we have northerly and easterly winds - which are not common.

Lets all get a grip and do what we can, recognising how lucky we are to live in such a mild climate.
