Is your heating ON or OFF?

Still off today here but sense the chill this evening so heating may trigger. i hate winter - at least the dark grey skies with no sunshine but have to admit there is something cosy about the lamps being lit, the curtains drawn, a warm rug over one's knees and either a good book or some interesting TV entertainment, although these days I rarely find much to interest me.......and when I do, am usually so tired I often fall asleep halfway through it !0

My heating is off at present. Definitely feeling a bit cooler yesterday, when I was out.
I have today given all of my radiators a good clean, removing all the dust, ready for this Winter.
I shall not put the heating on just yet, I am hoping for another few weeks yet, I will just pop another layer of clothing on.I am a Senior Ambassador on the Competitions Time Board and the Old Style MoneySaving Board.

My heating is never off, but only kicks in when it is less than 19 degrees from 06:30 or less than 15 degrees between 23:00 and 06:30. Not kicked in yet, although I do hear it warming up the water every morning. Came downstairs this morning and the thermostat said 19.5 degrees - so it won't be long!#2 Saving for Christmas 2024 - £1 a day challenge. £325 of £3660

Well, despite feeling a bit of a chill during the day, I didn't bother putting the heating on this evening as it was warm in the lounge under my fleece throw. I put the gas fire on for all of 30 minutes & once it got dark l lit one of those big perfumed candles in a jar, (which mimics a fireplace quite well) & a couple of tealights. The room temp went up by 1c with these on & some body heat.
Summer duvet still on the bed as the winter one is looking old & tired, so I'll be buying a new one. Instead I'll be layering up in bed a bit more & have an extra blanket handy if I need it.
The heating has been set to 18c for the past week & not come on once yet...0 -
I prefer bed layers, summer wool duvet encased in cozee home later will add my lovely welsh blanket to the foot of the bed, then will open it out to full bed. This is generally enough for me for a couple of months. Will swap summer duvet to winter then and repeat. Very extreme outside temperature <10 degrees. I would fasten summer and winter duvets together or just keep layering with more wool blankets
No ch yet, not even a fire and am still wearing t shirts in the house. Any bit of sun comes in and stays in so temperature now at 7.20am is 22. I like it, yes it is dropping very slowly but giving my body time to adapt. I might just close one vent0 -
It is extraordinarily mild for the time of year - next week set to be similar temps at the start of October
- but I think the rain and the fast rate at which daylight hours is decreasing post equinox is taking the edge off it a bit.
HWB for me last night, still no CH and my barometer is still a cause of daily fascination.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

The thermometer/hygrometer in my lounge is starting to bother me a bit. I used to have it in my bedroom to measure the humidity & it normally sat somewhere between 55-60% humidity which is a good level (not too wet & not too dry).
This week I moved it to the lounge & it's been sat at 70% ever since, sometimes rising to 72%. The lounge is usually a bit cooler & less ventilated as I can't leave the windows locked open an inch 24/7 like the bedroom, but there is a vent on the outside wall towards floor level (behind the TV).
I'm not sure if this high humidity is just due to the persistent rain we've had or I need to be getting some more ventilation into the lounge somehow. I've had the windows open for a couple of hours each day, but nothing has changed yet.
I've ordered another of the same thermometer so I've one upstairs & downstairs. Be interesting to see the difference, the upstairs is a lot better ventilated.0 -
Still off here but did out on a thermal vest this morning to ward off that chilly feeling when I'm just sitting reading or not being physically active.0

That is quite high humidity NI, I don`t expect you are drying anything in there so it must be coming from breathing. It would not be so high if your lounge was a bit warmer, my lounge is 22.6 degrees and humidity is 61 and I feel draughts right now because it is so windy out. I have 6 effective window vents and shut one on each window, so 3 are open. I want ventilation in my house, there are no wall vents and these new builds can be lacking essential air flow. I believe you can get vents put on windows, much safer than propping a window open
BTW there has been a lot of rain over a few days, my water butts are full, 2/3 of a cubic metre and right now it has started to pour again0 -

The lounge is above the cellar - it's a 1900 mid terrace and there is a very small patch of wall that has always been a bit wet. That's a party wall between me and next door, and I've never been able to solve it or figure out what causes it. I can't even say it is breathing as I hardly ever sit in there! The cellar is also not "wet", there is no condensation in there at all at the moment (there often is in the summer in high humidity due to it being cooler down there).
Upstairs I have the bedroom and bathroom windows open on the latch 24/7 all year round and dry my washing in the spare room having spun it on 1400rpm and I have never had any damp or condensation issue upstairs. The house feels "dry". In fact the hygrometer usually sat in the comfort zone of between 30-60% humidity when it was in the bedroom.
I've got another one on order so I can have one upstairs and downstairs.
The lounge is usually the coolest room in the house as it is North facing, has high ceiling and is above the cellar. The temp in there is currently 18.4c. I think I will give the heating a blast tonight and get the temp up to 22c in there and see if that helps.
Hygrometer is back in the bedroom now to see what the humidity is up there in comparison, considering all the rain we've had....0
