I've also now ead about the 19th century processing attached to A) getting a card from either of the Ulster cards (nothing to do with RBS.... I've asked) and B) managing to actually complete a Balance Transfer ..

Sounds like unless you've got a month spare then it's not worth it. Miss one payment if it's not all in place in tine and that's nearly 100 on 3k...
Plus the interest for the next payment... ... Too much stress and possible 'go wrong'

I've applied for an Ulster card, but other than the 6 mths 0% on purchases, if i get it, then I'm not going to try the the BT. No time left

    I've done this........
Quidco 20 quid cash back - Natwest Classic card 2% BT fee..... Instant online yes/no.....
    Seriously I mean within 3 clicks... 13months 0% on BT's... and a massive limit of 4,200.
    This makes it cheaper up to a 3,950 (79 at 2% - 20 = 59) transfer than even Capital One's 1.7% BT fee (capital one 59.50 on 3,500)

Have any MSEs signed up for the Ulster Bank card, which is part of the Royal Bank of Scotland group?
Yes. And bad bad news! Firstly they gave me a measly credit limit and secondly when I called their help desk, they told me there is a stamp duty charge of 40 Euros per year because the account is based out of Ireland. It would cost me 40 euros to close the account eventhough its only just been opened!

Anyone have any ideas about this? I feel like I'm being fleeced!

  • Hi All

Just thought I should let you know that the Ulster Bank Credit Card Deal is not a freebie after all. According to their help desk they have to charge 40 euros p.a (or 40 Euros immediately if you try to close) as government stamp duty because the account is run of Ireland. I'm stunned and baffled - but that's what I have just been told .

Not only that but they gave a really bad credit limit which no use to anyone, so no it looks like I'm actually going to end up out of pocket!

    And advice much appreciate

    Thanks for your replies.

I have received an application form from Ulster Bank, but now feel dubious about completing it due to the 40 Euro charge.

I have a debt of £5500 to transfer, which I will be able to pay off in November (5 months). Which card would you reccommend? I may have to apply for two cards, one in my name and one in my husband's name to ensure we have a large enough credit limit to transfer the full debt.

    Joanne.

I think you've been misinformed. According to the website, there are no charges that I can see:

Incidentally, if Ulster Bank is in NI, why are they charging in Euros?

    You need to visit www.getfirefox.com

Firefox is pretty well supported and acts almost identically on the Mac as on a Windows PC. It's also available for those Linux users out there.

The link above will take you to a page which will include a download link appropriate to the computer you're using at the time.

Thank you for this information. Have been offline for a while.

Update. Applied for Natwest card 8th... Arrived 14th.... Job done, plus.. as many transfers as you like...... (pay each time, but can be done after you've received the card)
  • Does anyone know if there are still "super Balance Transfer" cards ? By this I mean 0% cards where you can transfer to your current account instead of to another credit card, MBNA used to be one, but have just got half way through their online application form, and it doesn't look as if they offer the facility anymore.

I would also like to warn people, 2 months ago I applied for the Halifax one Online card offering 12 months 0% on purchases and balance transfers.

Firstly it is not online, I like to check my cards every day - the purchases one, anyway and the Halifax site says that they are working on this facility and it will be available in a few months.

I am using this card for purchases only and received my paper statemnt yesterday to find that I have been charged INTEREST, when it is supposed to be 12 months interest free on purchases...... I am writing to them today.

    Egg Money allows SBT still:

Make sure you get Egg Money and not the Egg card.
  • Thanks for that tipsychick

I had an Egg card briefly about 18 months ago, they had an offer of 4.95% life of balance. I got the card and when I phoned to do the transfer I just asked them to confirm the terms and they said there was also a 3% transfer charge making 7.95% interest in the first year??? Horrendous. Needless to say I didn't make the transfer and cancelled the card.

I'll have another look at them

    Thanks
