You would need the router but nothing else (unless you wanted a headset as well). PS3 can also play Bluray discs, so if you / DS(DD?) has a big TV they can watch HD movies on bluray discs.

That was my reason to buying a PS3. Means I didn't have to buy an Xbox + Bluray player.

Thanks, no don't have a big tv, just an nearly 9 year old widescreen...Toshiba, seems to be lasting forever!

Ok, so it seems ps3 is free to download games? Says on their site, many are free... Got myself all confused now:rotfl:It's my son who wants all this.

The thing is, I am really not prepared to fork out all the time for games, movies etc.... can't afford it! Son gets pocket money, he can be tight sometimes! Even if he wasn't, wouldn't want him spending loads on all this!

You think the PS3 is the best buy?

Demos are free on both PS3 and Xbox. Some stuff may be free, but usually full games require some sort of payment. PS3 use what they call Network Cards and Xbox uses a Points system. You have to pay for the cards/points which you then transfer onto the PS3/Xbox. Chargeable items are then deducted from the total as and when you buy.

Edit - Usually we say to buy the console his friends have so they can play together. On the other hand the PS3 will work out cheaper over time as a years Live for Xbox is around £32 at the moment.

Yes, thats a good point. Though if I get the Xbox, he will have to pay for the sub. He does know though he will have to save for games etc... I shall get a couple depending on price.
  • From an xbox point of view, which is what I am more familar with, arcade games, download content and videos are bought using Microsoft Points.

These typically cost £17 for 2100 points, but can be got cheaper by shopping around.

The games that you can download are typically "Xbox Live Arcade Games", and range from 200 to 1200 points, approx £1.70 to £10.20. All of these arcade games have a trial mode, which I think is different from the PSN games that sometimes don't have one. You can also download full xbox games, but this isn't worth doing, as they are always more expensive than buying them online.

For the films, I think these are 240msp (~£2) for rental of the standard definition version, which is all you will be needing if you just have a normal TV.

For the gold subscription, you get to play games online, access to facebook, twitter and last.fm, and also get some demos earlier. I also find that xbox live for an 'online platform' works a lot better than PSN, but that's my personal opinion
