Why did he want the PS3 first is that what his friends have ? if he is going to play online games would it possibaly be better to find out which console his friends have so he can play online with them ? .
Seems he has a couple of friends with Xboxes, not sure if they are online though! Think he was keen on the demos, movies online with Xbox.... He's online every day reading abt it... that's why he changed his mind. He's nearly 11.
Can I connect with a router instead of wireless modem and upgrading my package with Virgin, which I really don't want to do..0 -

Yes you can.
As long as you have enough free Ethernet ports on your router
Also yes, the ethernet cable provided is usually blue.. but there's so many colours out there!
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!0 -

Lol!! It's actually got a little label on it, saying ethernet;)
Was thinking of this one:

Would rather just pay for that, than upgrading and find 2 months down the line, he don't even go online!! He will have to pay for sub though, think I'm paying enough, plus his birthday on Dec 29th!!0 -

No!
There are 2 types of connection; ADSL and Cable. You need to find out which one you are. Majority of Virgin Media's are Cable. If yours is Cable, you need a Cable Router, not an ADSL Router.
Also are you able to take a picture of your current virgin box?
Sorry the pic is a bit big. Is it like that? Or does it look completely different?0 -
Can I hijack this thread for a quick question?
My son has an xbox but it's an older version. He asked last night if I would buy the 'stuff' needed for it to go Live.
I have a wireless router, and good connection.
DO I just need this pack http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/8054952/Xbox-360-60GB-Live-Starter-Kit/Product.html
let him use the free 3 months and then join him up for 12 months or whatever later?
Thanks0 -

You cannot get the wireless connection with xbox without an adapter. The old versions you have to pay for the adapter.

Something like that.
Or you can go wired, depends on your house and how viable that is. If you want wired, you just need an enternet cable which are cheap as chips.
Wireless Adapter

dont pay for a virgin media hub it is a pointless expense.
if you modem is through the cable network (ie not through your phoneline) then adding a wireless router is easy (if you just want a wired router you can turn off the wireless part in the settings or buy one) going wireless will futureproof you if you ever get something that requires wireless. very good cheap cable wireless routers are this and this they give you 4 extra ethernet ports for any device and also very fast wireless N that most devices (including the new xbox) use for the fastest speed.
one extra point to use a router is the inbuilt hardware firewall and it makes your computers far more secure than just connecting them to the modem,
one last point if you get a wireless router is set the security to WPA2-AES PSK encryption this is the only level of security that cannot be hacked (WEP encryption is as insecure as having no security)
have a read of this for some basic info on what a wireless router is and does0 -
