Err, no. Fuel system would still have been pressurised for such a short stop. The fuel doesn't continually flow in an unrestricted loop as you're describing when you turn the key on. The pump merely brings the pressure back up. Don't believe me? Turn the ignition on and see how long the pump runs for. If I'm correct, it'll stop after a few seconds. If you're correct, it'll run continuously.

    Possibly in the ark.
Not a commonrail with a lift pump that's just had the fuel cap off to re-fill.
  • Firstly, many thanks all.

It's the Disco 3 2.7 engine and there was around a third of a tank of diesel in when I filled up. 'Advice' came from a service manager who was trying to push me to claim on insurance and didn't want to disclose how much this will cost. Just feels like a scam.

Getting some other views in the morning from alternative garages but flush feels like the right option.

If it's out of warranty then take it to an independent garage and get them to just drain, replace filters, refill and drive. If it fails it'll cost you £6k anyway.

Most car dealers will go for the worst case scenario especially when there's an insurer to foot the bill.
    The man without a signature.
  • Go with the flush, If they invalidate the warranty any other problem is not likely to cost 6k.

I'd trailer it out of there (or tow it out if it's a manual), drain the tank take the fuel pump out the tank and empty it. reconnect everything fill with diesel, then disconnect the fuel lines at the engine side and flush the fresh diesel through.

Even if they void your warranty they can only void the fuel system and maybe the engine. You could maybe have the engine professionally inspected when it is up and running again and use the engineers report in the event of any warranty issues later. They cannot for example void any bodywork warranty or things like your driveshaft/ gearbox because they could not have been affected by this. So your warranty will be reduced at worst not void.

What age is the car and what warranty remains?

a friend of mine put 1/2 tank of unleaded in his diesel meganne estate, it made no noticable difference to the running of the car and that was about a year ago, all is still well
  • I'd filll it up to the brim with diesel, use it for 50 miles and fill back up. Keep filling it back up ever 50-100 miles.
  • Fill it to the top of Diesel and forget out about it...... Or if you're still worried top up every few miles to be on safe side like suggested above.

Land Rover are, quite reasonably, trying to protect themselves from any future claim from any part that could fail or contribute to a failure due to petrol contamination.

To replace every part that might, during the warranty period, fail will cost £6K. It is a lot of parts and very time consuming to do.

Personally I'd take a chance. It's definitely pay the 6k now or possibly pay for repairs to failed components later. You could very well be lucky. If LR insist the work is done, get an independent garage to pick the car up and flush it all out and change the filters etc.
