Help - £20 petrol could cost £6k
Comments
-
I'll do it for £5000 and cover the remainder of your warranty. If the vehicle fails due to the petrol fill up within that warranty, i'll give you your 5k back.0

drain , flush and new filter , have done these in hindreds now and only ever a handful that had severe damage , and they were mostly motorway driven after filling.0

It depends alot on how much diesel was in the tank when the £20 of petrol was put in. The more diesel the better, obviously! £6,000 seems extortionate to me, although I agree that petrol in a diesel is worse than vice-versa. I suggest a second oppionion and sod the warranty, afterall, you can buy a warranty if you so wish!0

Go back and tell them you just realised you actually paid for the wrong pump and did put diesel in it afterall.0

They're trying to get you by the short and curlies. As for the warranty thing that's simply blackmail
The 500 metres you drove will do nothing to the engine as you have already diluted the petrol with the diesel you had in the tank. Yes the lubrication properties in the diesel would be reduced but not to that greater extent but I daseay the 500 metres you drove were'nt at 70 MPH.
If it was a 200/300Tdi Disco I'd say top it up to the brim with diesel and run it through, however I am guessing it's Disco 3/4 with the Jag engine so let's take precautions as it's still a bit of a unknown quantity for running on mix and match fuels as it's a common rail engine.
Get the tank drained and flushed, replace the filter and if you feel inclined, flush the fuel lines, but I personally wouldn't bother with the lines. Another trick you can use is to pull off the diesel filter, drain the tank and leave the diesel filter and tank cap off for a day. Any residual petrol left will evaporate out. Then fill it to the brim with Diesel so any petrol left will be miniscule and so diluted with the diesel that no issues will occur.
This of course still leaves you with the problem with getting the Disco out of the clutches of this somewhat unscrupulous dealer, as it'll need to be trailered out.

A friend put £10 of petrol in their diesel Seat and drove 5 miles. Didn't realise until they went to start it a few hours later and it didn't. Drained the tank the next day and put a few litres of derv in to get to the filling station. Filled up and things have been fine ever since. Maybe luck was on their side that day.
You've nothing to lose by draining and filling with derv0 -

Agree'd, they're taking the !!!! in my opinion.
They think they can extort a huge sum of money from you by making you feel you have no choice.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Speed, distance doesn't really matter, the pump puts through a couple of litres per minute when it's on, it depends on what mix is in the tank.
I'd be inclined to leave it and drain and fill wth diesel.0 -
On Sunday I stupidly put £20 of petrol into my diesel Discovery. I drove for about 500 metres before realising my mistake. Arranged for my car to be towed to the dealer who have today said it will cost me £6k to replace the fuel system or invalidate the warranty. Any help or guidance please?
Yeah. They're talking rubbish. Sure a couple of hundred quid to drain the tank and the fuel lines I suppose but thats it.
When you next contact them, point out that for 500 metres of running, the engine would still have been running off what was still left in the fuel filter so no petrol would have made it into the injection system at all.0 -
Pump starts instantly, and circulates round, uses what it needs, the rest goes past the engine, and back to the tank, so it will have flushed through.
It's down to the dealer though, they know about it, so they'll void the warranty unless the system is changed. They should only void the fuelling system, and maybe engine though, the rest of the car shouldn't be affected.
Err, no. Fuel system would still have been pressurised for such a short stop. The fuel doesn't continually flow in an unrestricted loop as you're describing when you turn the key on. The pump merely brings the pressure back up. Don't believe me? Turn the ignition on and see how long the pump runs for. If I'm correct, it'll stop after a few seconds. If you're correct, it'll run continuously.0
