Help - £20 petrol could cost £6k

On Sunday I stupidly put £20 of petrol into my diesel Discovery. I drove for about 500 metres before realising my mistake. Arranged for my car to be towed to the dealer who have today said it will cost me £6k to replace the fuel system or invalidate the warranty. Any help or guidance please?

  • I run veg oil in my diesel car. In winter, it's possible to run as high as a 20% unleadeaded 80% veg oil mix.
Ok, i'm no mechanic, but a 500 metre journey requiring everything to be replaced at a cost of 6k? I'd let them "invalidate" the warranty and take it elsewhere.
500 metres probably wouldnt even have emptied the fuel filter.
    They're at it.

Sounds like petrol in a diesel is worse than diesel in a petrol.

Not quite sure how it will cost for a replacement OR invalidate the warranty. Either the warranty covers it, or it doesn't. If the dealer does any work to your car, whether covered by warranty or not, how can that invalidate it?

    Sorry I can't help more

  • It was Land Rover Assist that I called. Assumed this would be around £200 to drain, now feeling like I'm being blackmailed

Probably because Land Rover is not responsible for the driver putting incorrect fuel in it.
The warranty cover defects the vehicle has from it parts and manufacture.

If its a Disco 3 with the 2.7 v6 diesel,or the Disco 4 with the 3l diesel, then it won't be cheap, but Landie dealers are not the cheapest places either.

But you're on a Bosch mechanical pump, with it own oil feed.
Running a common rail pump on petrol will be the same as a Lucas mechanical, no lubrication.
Having said that, switching back to diesel will show if it's damaged it or not.
  • Pretend you didnt really put petrol in and fill to the top with diesel.

I am no engineers but if you are having to replace the fuel system anyway then you might as well try this?

    But would 500 metres matter?
Had the fuel filter off the Corsa recently. Probably holds 350ml or 12 miles worth at 50 MPG. Take that down to 25 MPG an your still looking at 6 miles worth.
I'm thinking the petrols not even got past the filter.

Pump starts instantly, and circulates round, uses what it needs, the rest goes past the engine, and back to the tank, so it will have flushed through.
It's down to the dealer though, they know about it, so they'll void the warranty unless the system is changed. They should only void the fuelling system, and maybe engine though, the rest of the car shouldn't be affected.
  • I doubt it has either.
Who said it would cost 6k? Was it someone at the call centre?
I would speak to the Service Manager at the dealership where the vehicle has been taken, explain what happened.
