AVG 2011 has just been released

Anyway, I uninstalled AVG and it worked again, so I read thru' a few of the other threads and decided to go with Avast, everything seems to be running fine now.

I had been trying to install AVG 2011. Always got an error, did use removal tool removal of AVG 9, even deleted many remnant AVG keys from registy after that but could not budge the error. Install MS Essentials AV instead but it hogs the CPU terribly so now looking for further alternatives.

I suspect its the remnants of AVG that are causing the problems

AVIRA and AVAST are your only other choices of av

One superb alternative is Avast :cool: just awesome and will work happily alongside Windows Defender.

Well I thought Microsoft Security Essentials was going to be the answer - alas no - even after switching the "monitor programs and processes" option off, it still brings the machine to it's knees. Going to try Avast as the next alternative. I had already disabled S&D's TeaTimer as it was using 60% of cpu (used to be fine with AVG 9), may try Arovaxshield as a replacement for TT to work alongside Avast, to ensure that the Registry does not change while Missus is using the computer.

Avast is superb; I gave up on Spybot ages ago and switched to paid-for MBAM -- it's a one-off payment and lifetime product -- not a huge expense at all.

What does that mean? That you used the 'uninstall' tool as theres no such thing as a 2009 removal tool
