I think I've had enough of AVG. Used it for years and years, but it's finally beginning to get to me. It's way too "clunky". I want my security to be discreet, running in the background watching out for threats. AVG has got more vocal, popping up where I don't want it (latest update installed a Firefox add-on, giving me a "security bar" toolbar, complete with yahoo! search etc.etc. - no option during update to ask if I actually wanted this!!). There are too many components, opening the security centre gives blocks of various scanning modules, all of which should run under one security mode. Link scanner is a pain, do I really trust green tick marks after links? Do I want my searches slowed while it checks links? No.
Time to shop around, might try Avira (anyone vouch for this?)
    Miles.

Well Avira is discreet, just sits in the background quitely doing what it's supposed to do, no glowing dials, no bells or whistles apart from the splash screen when you update on the free version, but there is ways and means to stop that if you want, doesn't bother me just one click and its gone.

Never had any problems with Avira, you did get the occasional glitch with the servers being busy for the updates especially at the weekends or if there was a big update for the virus definition files but have not had that for quite some time now.

You have only to look at the help sites to decide if an AV is poor or not .
Multiple posts asking for help to remove virus/trojan followed up by what AV are you using its either none or AVG .

I use the following to decide on AV suite one how difficult is it for the individual user as some are better but are no good to the novice that needs it running in the background without asking questions . Other users can go with a more advanced product .

Good or bad products personal use plus a long term Advanced + over many tests in the AV comparatives tests .

Protected by Kaspersky for the last five years with no problems .

  • Went with AVAST in the end. Quick installation, and already picked up a trojan. It's early days, but my system seems to be running faster since I removed AVG.

Hi, Trinitrotoluene, thank you for your feedback; we really do care about what people think, and we do want to improve our product. Here are some answers to your questions:

1-- In summary, we absolutely agree that it is necessary to focus on real threats and that is why AVG now has even better LinkScanner and behavioral technology, supported by the cloud. Independent tests show that we have the best detection when all these layers are active, please see the whole product tests conducted by both AV-Test and AV-Comparatives.

2-- That is because the whole installation package also includes all the runtime libraries and all languages. Consumers are encouraged to use the live installer (downloader) that only downloads the components necessary in a particular environment. Unlike other competitors, we also include the virus definition database in the package so no update is required when first installed, whereas others may download it before first scan.

3--On-access scans are exactly that - on access - when the file is accessed. That is why the firewall, online shield, e-mail scanner and LinkScanner all form important layers of protection before the threat can get on to a system.

4-- We release small updates typically cca 1-2 times a quarter, and some of them - not all - may require an update. In 2011, we have implemented some changes in the architecture that will further reduce the need for restarts, but sometimes they are necessary. If you are not seeing this behavior and are having to reboot more frequently, then please contact the support team for assistance.

5-- It is not designed for such environment, it is aimed at the SMB market place.

6—Our support team understand that companies do need to run older versions from time to time as business environments do not always allow things to change quickly. I would strongly recommend that you contact our support team if you have not already; I assume you are already in discussions with them on these issues.

7—Our interface is tested by the beta community and several insight groups we have and the feedback is positive, this is of course personal preference and we are sure you will understand that we have to adopt the interface that the majority of users like.

7—The current release installer uses MSI, please check it out.

8—We are constantly working to improve our offering to our customers, and support is one area we continually focus on. Would it be possible for you to contact us with the incident id’s so we can look into this?

9—The beta program is designed to allow these types of issues to be addressed. If these issues were not reported to us please contact AVG Support.

I hope these answers helped manage your experience with AVG 2011, and thank you again for your feedback.

    Best,
    Keoni

    Keonichavez,

Do you have permission to post as a representative of your company?

I tried the last version of AVG. Up until that point I was a fan, and would advise others to use it.

The last version was a travesty. As soon as I had installed it I realised I had made a big, big mistake. Talk about slooooooow!!

Didn't seem too effective either, and soon off my PC.

I certainly won't be trying any AVG versions any time soon

Hi BillTrac, yes, as Junior Community Manager, I have full permission to post to forums.

I'm sorry to hear you're having issues; by "last version", do you mean AVG 2011?

They mean, do you have permission from Martin/Moneysavingexpert to post as a company representative?

(I'm guessing no, seeing it doesn't say that under your username)
