  • 1-- In summary, we absolutely agree that it is necessary to focus on real threats and that is why AVG now has even better LinkScanner and behavioral technology, supported by the cloud. Independent tests show that we have the best detection when all these layers are active, please see the whole product tests conducted by both AV-Test and AV-Comparatives.

That's the thing - I understand that independant tests are important, but we are putting it through better testing (IE real life users). You claim a better Linkscanner, I remember when that was originally released and caused an excessive load on peoples servers and their broadband because of the excessive amount of traffic - in short, I don't trust it. I have checked on AV-test and it appears a few other companies scored 5.5 on the test. What you did score was 4.0 (the lowest score) for actually getting rid of viruses. The latest report at AV-comparatives places you eigth http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_od_aug2010.pdf. Another great exercise in manipulating your words to give the impression you are the best when you are clearly not.
2-- That is because the whole installation package also includes all the runtime libraries and all languages. Consumers are encouraged to use the live installer (downloader) that only downloads the components necessary in a particular environment. Unlike other competitors, we also include the virus definition database in the package so no update is required when first installed, whereas others may download it before first scan.

I don't really care what it contains, it still shouldn't be 140 (I notice your 64bit is 160 meg). There is a reason your "rivals" don't include defintion updates - because they are constantly updated and I have seen AVG many a time install and then have to do quite a serious update because your builds are out of date. Your competitors avoid this by getting the virus definitions after install so they are guaranteed to be the latest definitions. Even then, the virus definitions aren't that big (about 10 meg from MSE I believe).
3--On-access scans are exactly that - on access - when the file is accessed. That is why the firewall, online shield, e-mail scanner and LinkScanner all form important layers of protection before the threat can get on to a system.

The on-access scanner should be scanning everything that the PC is doing, surely. What you are telling me here is AVG has not one point of failure but five. I should not have to have the AVG firewall active to prevent a virus from being detected. Now should I have to have the linkscanner or the e-mail scanner installed.
4-- We release small updates typically cca 1-2 times a quarter, and some of them - not all - may require an update. In 2011, we have implemented some changes in the architecture that will further reduce the need for restarts, but sometimes they are necessary. If you are not seeing this behavior and are having to reboot more frequently, then please contact the support team for assistance.

At its peak we were restarting our servers once every three weeks due to AVG updates (behaviour I have never seen in any other anti virus). I am glad you have seemingly improved it in 2011, but if we're still having to restart then your are still worse than your competitors in this area.
5-- It is not designed for such environment, it is aimed at the SMB market place.

Who do you think support the majority of small businesses? Thinking that most people in most small businesses have the ability to use the remote admin console is naive and is not representative of the real world.
6—Our support team understand that companies do need to run older versions from time to time as business environments do not always allow things to change quickly. I would strongly recommend that you contact our support team if you have not already; I assume you are already in discussions with them on these issues.

You have obviously not read the comment fully as I have mentioned I have already contacted technical support. You have completely avoided the original question and have avoided answering everything in it. Here is a new flash about the e-mail plugin for everyone:

If you are using AVG business edition; there is at least a 1 in 3 chance that your exchange email scanner is not working at all. Better than that, unless you actually physically check it by going into the component (which doesn't report itself as not working) you will never know

A call for this has been open for nearly a month with your technical support and they have still not fixed the problem. Ridiculous.
7—Our interface is tested by the beta community and several insight groups we have and the feedback is positive, this is of course personal preference and we are sure you will understand that we have to adopt the interface that the majority of users like.

That is good for them. Our actual real life testing has shown the interface actually confuses people.
7—The current release installer uses MSI, please check it out.

I would do if I had the time, unfortunately nearly all my days are spent at the moment removing spyware and viruses from PC's where AVG hasn't caught the virus/spyware in time. Infact, while writing this one of my customers has just phoned me with a lovely infestation of Anti Malware Doctor 2010. Guess what didn't detect it? Correct! AVG!
8—We are constantly working to improve our offering to our customers, and support is one area we continually focus on. Would it be possible for you to contact us with the incident id’s so we can look into this?

Basically everyone, all the engineers are in the Czech Republic and getting to them is incredibly difficult. If you pay for this product tech support is awful, and is quite honestly the worst I have ever seen with any company (and I deal with a lot of companies).
9—The beta program is designed to allow these types of issues to be addressed. If these issues were not reported to us please contact AVG Support.

Please see point 8. You shouldn't be pushing out software that is blatantly not ready yet. You may get away with it for home users, but for business users absolutely not. You are blatantly failing on your beta tests.
I hope these answers helped manage your experience with AVG 2011, and thank you again for your feedback.

    Best,
    Keoni

They didn't - they just led me to believe that AVG spend more time pushing buzz and ad words and trying to push out new products and less time fixing their currently completely broken, critically flawed software.
If my post helped you in anyway, please hit the "Thanks" button! Please note any advice I give is followed at your own risk!

    What security have you got?

This problem is usually because other security is running at the same time

So which is the best free antivirus software?

Sorry, this might be off topic, but just to answer you, in my opinion it is Kasperky. :)

To the OP, I do agree with you. I often had virus problems when I was using AVG. I don't think I'll go back to using it again.

Unfortunately Kaspersky is not free unless you are with Barclays.
  • I have ran AVG Free since October 2008 when I purchased my new system. It has been fine but it was updated to AVG Free 2011 and nag balloons to run PC Analyzer have started to appear. On a previous system I used AVast and, as far as I recall, it was OK. Anyone else experienced similar with AVG 2011 or am I the only one still running AVG lol?!

I downloaded AVG 2011 last night, I've been using the free version of AVG for years, and my internet stopped working:eek:
Did this happen to anyone else?
Ad-aware was running at the same time and could have conflicted with the new AVG

Anyway, I uninstalled AVG and it worked again, so I read thru' a few of the other threads and decided to go with Avast, everything seems to be running fine now.
