Here is what I think of it:

1) Installed AVG 2011 on test virtual machine
2) Pulled a known virus that has been in the wild for a while on to the test machine
3) Ran the executable and AVG did nothing
4) Scan with hitman pro, hello trojans!

No antivirus software is going to catch every virus or trojan! Not even HitMan Pro, good though it is. Are we perhaps generalising from the particular ?

Surely the Virus Bulletin tests would be a bit more comprehensive and thorough?

I am not kidding when I say I have rarely seen AVG intercept a piece of spyware - it is absolutely completely useless in my opinion.

I am not basing that on reviews I am basing this on myself administering over 1100 PC's, over 100 seperate networks for the past 3 years with AVG as their sole protection.

If I stacked up the evidence with AVG, the pile would be higher than everest so hasty generalisation; no ;)

The professional expert I occasionally consult agrees with you - describing it as the worst he has ever come across!

Why use avg when you can use avast or avira which are imo much better
  • So which is the best free antivirus software?
  • Hi everyone, this is Keoni Chavez, Junior Community Manager with AVG. I'd like to mention CNet's review of our new 2011 product, as a counterpoint; I'd provide a link, but as a new user to this forum I'm barred from doing so. A quick search for "CNet" + "AVG 2011" will turn it right up.

As with most things, your personal experience is the deciding factor, and I won't argue against that, but I do urge those who are undecided to download our free product and try it for yourself. You will find the download link directly from AVG's front page.

Thank you for your consideration, and I'm always willing to hear feedback!

    Respectfully,
    Keoni
  • Can't actually find the cnet review but perhaps this is it:

If feedback is wanted about AVG:
I think most people on this board are quite sceptical about how good AVG is from personal experience (including myself). I personally downloaded you free trial of your internet suite a few months ago, and the AVG site checker kindly declared an infected site was safe. Although the anti-virus programme did find the infections (which is good), it could not remove it at all, which is not helpful. Also through helping on this board I find that many people who ask for help with an infection have AVG installed on their computers...
