Many thanks for making the effort Replicant. I too am now put off and will NOT be buying this monitor, perhaps the lack of Digital input has made it a bargain basement price. I have just read a review of the Hanns-G monitor (which does have DVI in) in Computer Active, where it is given four stars out of five and this was at a £150 price, so I may well buy it. But I still need to know if my laptop, which drives an external monitor at just about any resolution except 1440x900 will work with these Wide screen monitors.

    Cheers

    Edit

An After thought. Did Micro Direct confirm lack of DVI by just checking their computerised stock details or the actual monitor out of the box?

The sales person at Micro Direct did have to go off and check out the monitor after I quoted the PDF doc to him / or at least queried with the Tech team and then confirmed it had NO dvi input...... just be interesting to find out where does sell the model with dv? After all its stated as having this in the manual?

Personally the Hanns spec isnt of the same quality, I'd sooner track down the Xerox with the DVI input of the same model, then a well worthy purchase I believe......

As for the resolution query, from what I understand if a graphics card does not support 1440x900 then the display will have the black strips running down the side, which isnt ideal but still useable...... I've also read though that some people have downloaded drivers which have allowed this higher resolution, cant comment on your laptop though - sorry.

For the past 10 months I have been using a Samsung 940mw that was posted on this board for £299 from PC World at the beginning of the year. It's a 19" Widescreen monitor + TV, HD Ready. Stunning PC monitor, accpetable Freeviw picture.

However, I am in the market for another, or to be honest, the Samsung is off to the bedroom and I want another one for the home office.

So to net it out what is the best 19" (or 21") monitor WITH some kind of SCART / tuner under £250?

But it does not have any SCART or AV connectivity. I have no plans to put Sky HD in the home office so I am not sure this fits the bill. To recap, what is the best 19" of 21" monitor WITH SCART or AERIAL connectivity?

    Hi Replicant

Dabs are selling the Xerox for £125.54 inc vat and according to the specs it does have the DVI input.
    http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?quicklinx=48GQ&engine=froogle&keyword=Xerox+XM3-19w+-+flat+panel+display+-+TFT+-+19"-+5ms&v=2#infoarea

In the product description it quotes the Xerox blurb:
"XM3 series has unique XInput Signal Selection for the convenience of multiple input sources. The feature allows concurrent connecting PC and another sources such as DVD, game console or another PC/NoteBook.". This is the phrase that made me think that maybe Microdirect had got their product description wrong as this implies ALL XM3 Monitors will have 2 Analogue and 1 Digital inputs. Anyway Dabs are only charging £1 more than Microdirect,

    Cheers

I had another look last night at the Xerox monitor, I visited their website and this monitor states that DVI is optional...... very strange as surely they'd be better off having this as a standard part of the unit, and I would have thought certainly sold more of them!?
Anyway, I checked out Dabs, upon looking at the spec I noticed the contrast ratio is 500:1, yet on Micro Direct and Xerox direct it states 800:1, so I have emailed Dabs this query as they will not take calls..... I have also queried the DVI input they state it having to get confirmation of this.
I have also emailed Xerox Direct, see if they can shed any light on the actual specs and why places may differ? Cant hurt......
PERSONALLY, if Dabs come back and say it does have DVI then I will purchase without a doubt, it beats the Hanns and many other monitors out there for its spec and price.

With regards to someones query on WHICH monitor to purchase, you may wish to check this out, it explains what all the terms mean ie. ms, pixel pitch etc etc and also gives reviews on many monitors, old reviews but helpful never the less:-

  • Cheers Zaccy, I tried the online chat, all busy so I ended up with email..... glad you got through.
Well thanks for editing your response, so this monitor DOES have the DVI then if purchased from Dabs, NICE!! :T
So even at a worse case of 500:1 contrast as apposed to some stating 800:1, its still a good buy and great spec I think.

During this time also I have emailed the experts at Toms Hardware guide about this monitor, feel free to view at: http://forumz.tomshardware.com/ce/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=363342#363342
Be interesting to see their opinions of it and then I think that will determine if I go ahead today or not!?

    EDIT,
I've looked at the Hanns again and read many reviews, especially on a highly recommended site called Newegg, most users from Toms Hardware guide order from these people, highly rated..... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16824254005
Plus it comes with all the cables and specification seems better than when I first viewed this monitor? Maybe its been updated since or maybe I was looking at another model? Hmmmm, anyway, maybe this is the monitor for me after all??

Dazed - you recommend this highly as well, any problems with dead pixels or any idea what the return policy is?
  • Well after many enquiries and forum chats including here I conclude that the Hanns LCD monitor is definitely the way to go for its value and specification, to support this I detailed my findings/reviews:-

    http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?quicklinx=446N&v=2#infoarea

    http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=14874&GroupID=1172

    http://www.channelweb.co.uk/personal-computer-world/hardware/2161296/hanns-g-hw191

http://cms.hannsg.net/filectrl/ISO13406-2_Pixel.pdf - For this monitor 7 and below = no exchange

Also, a note from an experienced user I was advised, and quote "I checked it out to the point to know it has a Samsung TN panel with 3 year warranty"

TN Panels:- The TN+Film (Twisted Nematic) display is the most common consumer display type, due to its lower price. The pixel response time on modern TN panels is sufficiently fast to avoid the shadow-trail artifacts that were a cause for complaint in the past. This fast response time has been a heavily marketed aspect of TN displays, although in most cases this number does not reflect performance across the entire range of possible color transitions. However this marketing strategy, combined with the relatively lower cost of production for TN panels, has led to the dominance of TN in the consumer market.

Just need to find out if Micro or Dabs provides the DVI cable free with the product or not as some retailers do.
Needless to say, this monitor is for me! :j

Actually with regards to resolution it would just expand whatever it gets with no black strips. If your card dosent support 1440 x 900 you would do whatever the closest is and monitor would auto adjust. However when using proper video card and/or monitor drivers, it would let you do 1440 x 900. On a laptop you need to cycle through the outputs so the laptops built in screen is off, then you could use 1440 x 900. If the laptop screen is still on it would only output whatever the max of that is.
